45" Sharp or 50" plasma + 30" Apple Cinema?

I'm trying to decide between the following:

1) the Sharp 45" panel used as both a computer monitor and an HDTV

2) the Apple 30" Cinema display used as computer monitor and a 50" plasma as HDTV

Is there any advantage in having a 1080p panel like the Sharp when viewing 1080i source material?

If the answer is "no" then wouldn't it make more sense to forget about convergence and choose option 2 since you get 2560 x 1560 pixels instead of 1920 x 1080 pixels for computer use and a screen that's 5 inches larger with superior black levels when viewing HDTV?

On the flip side if HD-DVD were ever to offer 1080p source material the obvious answer would be option 1.

Does anyone have an educated guess on whether 1080p HD-DVDs or 1080p broadcasting might become a reality wihtin the next 5 years?

Yeah, either HD-DVD or Blu Ray will be here inside of 5 years. The Playstation3 will most likely be Blu Ray, which should really push that technology to the market, and that'll be here probably holiday season 2006. The Xbox 2 (or neXt or whatever) is sounding like it may be HD-DVD based, and that should be out in 12-18 months.

So, 1080p content is coming... but it'll likely be 2 years down the road. Still well inside of your 5 year question.

That said, either option sounds quite appealing to me. I don't think you can really lose either way.
