480i and Infocus 7205

624 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  gagaliya
It's my understanding that the onboard de-interlacing/scaling electronics of my new 7205 are likely better than what can be found in most DVD players, such that 480i is the preferred input signal for it. From what I can glean from this forum, and from visiting local stores, players that output 480i through DVI or HDMI are very rare and quite expensive. Plus when I read about HDCP issues, I just want to say nuts to it and go with component.

If the above is more or less an accurate assessment of the situation, is 480i a standard format for component outputs? If using such an output, is there much difference in PQ between players?

Thanks,

Jeff

You are correct in your assement in that the onboard scaler is great. A quality 480i source with a flat freq response with component will give you a great picture.

however you will get to the next 5% with a DVI/HDMI input from a DVD player such as a 3910/2910 from Denon or a Pioneer Elite 59. The picture from these units will be slightly sharper and cleaner than a component connection at 480i.

I am currently using a 3910 via DVI to my 7205, the picture is fantastic......however it is only a small % better than 480i component from a Denon 2900.
Be sure to do a search for the 7205 menu adjustments to use when using either input.
The Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi is one of the few players that will output 480i over HDMI. No DVI out players do at all. But because the 7205 can not accept a 480i digital video signal, but only 480p, 720p, and 1080i, you would have to get a Lumagen scaler which can handle a 480i HDMI input (DVDOs can not), and output 720p over DVI into the 7205. Great way to go. Equal to the very expensive SDI mplayer and scaler modifications, but the cheapest Lumagen is $1000. It's a lot cheaper to get a DVI or HDMI player and run it at 480p into the 7205. (See TPV Issue #56 review of the Pioneer and Denon 5900.)

Didn't the latest firmware for the 7205 correct the 480i digital in issue?

I have yet to upgrade to it, but may if i can find someone to lend me the cable. Maybe my dealer will help me out.

Okay, so then I'm using the 7205's scaler, but not its de-interlacer. So unless the player's de-interlacer is equal to the 7205's, it seems like I'm taking two steps forward and one step back. I don't really want to buy the same electronics(high quality de-interlacer) twice, then not use one of them, especially since the 7205 was quite a stretch by itself. So I'm wondering how much difference there will be between component 480i, and DVI 480p with ~$300 player....

Thanks,

Jeff
I'm going throught the same issues. Here I spend a good deal of money on a great FP and then deal out more just to get the same technology. I've found sending the 480i signal to be the best pic from my older 45A. I would like to get a new universal that sounds really better than my current player for DVD-A and SACD. Recently I've found myself buying more music which has sent me in this direction. I've thought about the SP1000 and 3910 or 2910 and nice CDP (Arcam or modified Music Hall CD25). Everyday I change my mind.

You are right. The latest firmware for the 7205 accepts 480i on the digital input. So what you need is a player that outputs 480i over HDMI. The Panasonic DV-59AVi is one. I believe the Sony upscaler does, but it has it's own problems. And I believe some Arcam's do too.
I tried to send 480i/576i to my sp 7205 via DVI using an Arcam DV79 player, which can output interlaced via hdmi. The picture was terrible and true-life was not available in the 7205 menus. IF tech support indicated that the faroudja chip is not engaged when the 7205 receives an interlaced signal via DVI.
can someone just please give us some good dvd player models that output 480i over component? Denon 2900?

all the ones that was recommanded in other threads such as the panasonic rp91 are out of production and difficult to find.
