hi all,

here is my problem I'm trying to decide best video card for my setup. I will be doing some gaming on it, just for kicks of having a 61" monitor
probably mostly FarCry2 and some RTS games. Here is my current config of my system

CPU : Intel Q9300 quad core

motherboard : GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R

or Intel DP45SG

PSU : OCZ 600w ModXStream Pro

memory : 2x2GB of appropriate type

Video Card : ??????????????

Sound Card : Auzen X-Fi HomeTheater HD(end of Jan '09)

BR/HD DVD drive : LG Model GGC-H20L

OS HDD : WD 150GB Raptor

HDD : Hitachi 750GB

OS : XP Pro or Vista Ultimate

TV : 61" Samsung 1080P DLP

Yamaha RX-V663BL

4850 will not have quite enough power to process high resolutions with full eyecandy unless it is an old game. Full effects at high resolution is where lots of vRam is benefitial.

4870 does benefit a bit from 1GB memory at high resolutions.

the extra gpu power will benefit more than the extra ram, especially if they are priced close enough between the models you are looking at.

The extra GPU speed and extra memory bandwidth is way more important the extra memory space.

Way more important.

Since you say you don't do that much gaming on it, I'd get the cheaper one. A 4850 512MB would be fine for you, if you're willing to accept having to drop to 720p for some newer games. The 4870 512MB won't even be able to handle some new games at 1080p smoothly enough with everything on high/ultra.
