And that's still a huge problem. At least if I bought a Core unit it is still the same hardware but if I want HDMI later I have to buy a whole new console.
HDMI would be the only upgrade I would ever want...

I mean if I wanted the flash reader slots, just use a 5 buck USB plug-in.

The hard drive isnt really even an issue, Sony doesnt plan on letting movies to be saved and even then it wouldnt be enough space...But I would love to have an external one but that isnt going to happen, atleast not by Sony's say.

Wifi sucks, I love wired and have no intentions of ever switching to a wireless connection. But is good for A LOT of people....
The HDD will be SATA no doubt, so wiring your own shouldnt be a problem, other than probably having to open it up to get the cable hooked to it as the slot wont be very easy to fit your hand into. Plus it can use network drives to save upon anyways.
Has Sony said you can plug in a USB media reader? I would bet Sony will let you plug in regular old USB WiFi and a regular USB harddrive and that would be the upgrade. But even people who don't have a use for HDMI right now want to have the option... I actually wouldn't be surprised if the heat Sony's taking would result in them changing the system. They did change the PS1 waaaay back when to make more money. The original PS1 had A/V ports built into the back of the system meaning you could buy any cables you wanted and they changed that so you had to buy only official PS1 cables.
Wireless to Ethernet bridges are pretty easy to find. I got one shipped to me for under $25. Works great with consoles.

Similarly, my $20 flash card reader works fine via USB 2.0 on the Xbox 360. It would be stupid if Sony didn't allow support for this.

I'm kinda interested in how the hard drive will work though. Is it just in a compartment on the bottom or something? ie. They could sell a dedicated Sony part, but still make it easily user accessible.

HDMI is a big problem though, and I'm guessing that Sony will use this for the upsell. Then again, the Xbox 360 doesn't have HDMI at all so here Sony has the advantage.

Shocked that this isn't another press release from Sony.

"We will have upgrades"

Pushes date to 2007 to see what else Microsoft and Nintendo are doing...
I imagine there are going to be some really interesting homebrew linux distros for the PS3. Couple that with the ability to swap the stock hard drive for a really big one, and the PS3 could turn into tinkerer's dream.
As much as it sucks that HDMI is not available on both systems, if you think about this realistically, it doesn't really matter. Those who are hardcore enough to want HDMI will just get the more expensive one anyway. Those people tend to be more of the home theater crowd and have more cash to blow on the hobby anyway. For the rest, which is the majority of the people out there, HDMI won't matter one bit to them. That's probably at least 90% if not more of the people out there who will end up with a PS3. You can still do 1080p through component video and for at least several years, and at this point I think likely for the lifetime of Blu-Ray, you will be able to output HD movies at HD res through component video. Given that these two factors were my only real issues before, the issues is really a non issue now. Most people will not be able to see the difference between analog and digital HD video output. If that's the only thing that is the difference here, then in the grand scheme of things does it really matter? Think of the entire market, not your narrow hardcore view.

I just got an HDMI cable for my digital cable box to my tv and I must say on 1080i it looks like crap but on 720p it looks pretty good. But component cables still seem sharper and not as dull. I truly dont think the HDMI output is going to make a difference one way or another.

I just can't believe Sony will let you put just any oem laptop drive in the PS3. It avoids the whole point of making money on accessories. I bet they offer a 60 GB upgrade option of the base PS3 thats in some kind of plastic docking container (somewhat like the 360s hard drive but for an internal slot). It'll cost $150+ and you will need a modchip of somekind to use a non-sony drive...

I do like the promise of the linux options for the PS3 3-4 years down the road. Hopefully we'll be able to do really cool things.

Well for what it's worth, Sony has already stated that they don't plan on selling a HDD upgrade accessory and that people are free to upgrade with their own 2.5" HDD.
