4D-3D projectors, not real 4K-3D ?

525 Views 12 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Car67
Hi ... good day everyone !!

I'm wondering if anyone know if there is any 4K 3D capable projector able to playback 4K-3D contents, without downscaling to HD.
Most 4K projectors, when playing back 3D they switch to HD and 120hz, ( because active 3d projection ) , so final (efective ) resolution per eye, is [email protected]

I know playing back 3D in 4K needs 120hz , so there will be [email protected] per eye, but don't really know if any projector could do this...at
this price range...

Thanks !!

Is there native 4K 3D content? I am not aware of any. It's at least not widely available.

There is no 4K 3D content. Nor will there ever be any . Most television and projector manufacturers have moved on from providing 3D support. There are still a few. You will not see any native 4K 3D content being put out by any major studios and doubtfully any independent studios either.

Well, it's for me... I produce 4K-3D contents... but I'm using 4K-LG TV sets... , from a couple years ago... of course.

Thanks anyway !!

Just curious: for whom are you producing this content, what content and who consumes this content?

And how to you produce 4K 3D content ?...

Are you suggesting only an older LG can display 4K 3D content ? ..

I think we still have questions.
I can't speak for OP, but for example with 3d stereoscopic gaming, you can potentially produce a 4k 3d source.
The LG OLEDs with their passive display would then in effect downscale this slightly, so not full resolution but still a very useful bump over 1920x1080.

But yeah, no full 4k 3d displays that I'm aware of, althought it might be possible with [email protected] with HDMI 2.1

maybe some 100k professional/commercial stack can do 4k120 3d.

Thats some crazy bandwidth btw
A big issue is that you lose all the color depth when you do this because of the bandwidth limitations of 120hz/4K.

The ability to run with 4K 3D is not new and a number of professional cinema type projectors have supported it for a number of years. I did an installation that was an offshoot of a 3 dimensional projection space which used a Christie cinema DLP with dual DisplayPort inputs. It was fed from a very high end PC and modeled 3 dimensional virtual walk through spaces as part of design and development. The main chamber used 5 projectors within a open sided cube for above/below, and 3-sides of dimensional projection with active glasses. The projector we installed was for an overflow space so others could take part of the 3D environment.

It required dual DP connections to achieve the 3D effect.

Cost was in the 100 grand range.

No consumer level product is anywhere in our sub $3,000 ball park, and may not be for a long time. When the HDMI 2.1 specification is ratified and official, and we finally see equipment being produced, then this may make it to some chips that are manufactured, but not yet, and not for several years to come, at the earliest, if ever.

I'd honestly be very happy for a 4K HDR **SBS** format that contained 24/60/120 Hz options. Half the resolution would be just fine, when you can have HDR and HFR options. This should require the same bandwidth as standard 4K, so why not?

I think we still have questions.

I use two digital cinema cameras in a 3D-RIG. I've been doing this for 30 years now... so able to
show aerial, underwater, etc etc...

LG 4K Cinema 3D TV are able to play over-under ( top-bottom ) or side by side UHD formats in 3D. This is passive,
so the effective resolution per eye is ( half vertical or half horizontal, depending on 3D format selected ).

As the internal enconding for 3D is horizontal linear polarized, if you use top-bottom you get the best possible quality,
so the effective resolution of viewing is 3840x1080 per eye, pretty cool...

Thanks to all. Question solved...
