I ran 7.1.2 before in a 15 ft wide by 25 ft long room with screen on short wall. I found the overhead panning from left to right and front to back and vice versa of both to be quite a bit more immersive with 4. Soundtracks also have more depth. If you able to run 4 Atmos speakers even in a smaller room I would do so.I’m going to start building a theater in one of my spare bedrooms within the next month. The room is pretty small at 10’x11’. My main question is whether it’s worth it to go for a 5.1.4 Atmos setup. I for sure want 5.1.2. I have read many reviews and posts online comparing having 2 Atmos ceiling speakers to 4. Some have said it’s only a subtle difference, others have said Atmos is only worth doing if you have 4 ceiling speakers.
It should be noted from the pictures that I will only be doing one row of 4 seats in this room. Usage will be around 50% movies (4K Blu Rays) and 50% gaming. I already own Klipsch towers, center, and surrounds, as well as an Outlaw Ultra X12 and a 65” OLED.
I plan on getting a new receiver, if I do 5.1.2 it looks like the Denon X1500H is around $300. From my research, the cheapest Denon or Marantz (want to stick with those brands) that will do 5.1.4 is the Marantz SR6013 for $750 on A4L. Not sure on what Atmos ceiling speakers are best, but from some looking it seems decent in-ceiling speakers might be around $150 each, please let me know if that’s not correct.
So overall it would cost me an extra $750 to do 5.1.4 instead of 5.1.2. Do you think it’s worth it in this room? I’m typically the person that likes to spend more the first time to do it right, but want to make sure it makes sense in this case.

Also - any suggestions on in ceiling speakers? Not sure how high quality I need for Atmos, I see Klipsch and Polk have some for around $150ish each.
Timbre matching is certainly very important across LCR and to a lesser extent your surrounds but I don't think it really matters much with your Atmos speakers from what I have read and heard with my ears.The svs atmos speakers provide for a variety of placement. And easy ability to relocate if better placement for your room is discovered. Other options are in-ceiling in which case I would recommend staying with the same brand as your other speakers so they are tone matched. It’s Really a personal preference and room acoustic/placement needs matter.
5.1.4 is bare minimum for any size room.
Considering I'm doing 9.1.6 in a 12 x 12 room I don't see a problem.What about for my 9 X 9 room lol. Running 5.1.4
