Hello,

I'd like to have 5.1 surround with my hdtv. Actually I don't (really) have a receiver (well, i use the headphone output from my tv and put it in my onkyo amp i bought in 1993 with rca cables
).

What i would like to do (if it can) is buying a good 5.1 or 7.1 receiver and use my headphone (an old senhheiser 550). I wonder if the headphone output on a 5.1 receiver will make a fake surround effect in the headphone or it will only output some stereo or something like that :)

It would cost less than buying those sony mdr-ds6500 or sennheiser rs-170.

Thanks in advance for your answers !

Great, so it seems the receiver need to have something to output some fake surround. Helped by your answer i have found that yamaha has SILENT CINEMA function and some other have DOLBY HEADPHONE "function". I will look more on the internet about that. Thanks
