I need some desperate help guys.

My girlfriend and I just moved into a home together.

For the last few years I have been happily rocking out with:


Infinity beta 50 fronts

Infinity beta 20 rears

Infinity beta C250 center

Velodyne VX-10B


Harmon Kardon AVR-140


I would say I listen to music 60% and movies 40%. Our new living room is 18' x 15'


I've been told that speakers are too big to make a happy home

I'm in need of some recommendations. Should I swap it out for a whole new 5.1 system? should I just replace the fronts and rears and keep the center and sub? Our budget is max $850. I think best thing I've seen so far is this KEF C1 system for $500.


What do you all think?

Uhh... not to be rude, but you have no reason not to throw a BIG stink about that. She'll back off, especially if you had them prior to dating her...

I am in a similar boat, I want floor standers, but the wife isn't having it.


Eyeballing Paradigm monitors, DefTech Promonitor 1000's, MartinLogan Motion 4's.


I was looking seriously at the HSU HB1, Energy RC-10, Aperion Initimus, but they are larger and less aesthetically pleasing to her.


I showed her the DefTech Mythos, and she wasn't having it.


I think you are in a better position because you should be able to negotiate a decent sized speaker (larger drivers) since you have towers now. Keep your Beta 20's and get the best front three you can get away with. Then upgrade your rears later.

Throw that Bose up on craigslist or something for like 200 bucks less than retail.

Yeah, those were good times. I'm loving the Jamos. They sound pretty good and the finish quality is impossible to beat for that price. I still need to build some floating shelves to put the surrounds on, and I do sometimes feel guilty for taking up so much space in the front room, but other than that life is good.

I found some Paradigm Titan V.6 monitors at a local retailer for $500.

They sounded pretty amazing in their listening room, and I'm pretty sure that I'll pick them up.


Do you think that I should throw down another $300 (for the demo) for the Paradigm CC-190 center channel? or should I just stick with the Infinity C250 center? will it be a total mismatch?

You're not going to get what many of us consider to be acceptable performance from physically smaller speakers because they lack the displacement needed for distortion free peaks at pleasant listening levels.


The SAF friendly compromises which accommodate that are to either get nicer large speakers that are more like furniture, hide the speakers behind an acoustically transparent projection screen and/or false wall, or use in-walls built with rigid enclosures behind decorator friendly grills.


Three of these for the front stage should work OK for $2700 retail.

You guys might prefer to keep your existing speakers until you've saved up enough extra pennies.

Do you have another room you could move your existing 5.1 set up (basement?) and then go 2.0 or 2.1 in the living room? Especially with favoring music over movies, a nice 2 channel set up might be ideal with 5.1 elsewhere in the house.
