I have been looking for the past few weeks for some speakers for my bedroom. It's a small square room 10x10 with 8' ceiling. I know that's terrible for sound. I've looked at AJ Pioneer bookshelf speakers and Dayton subs but right now I'm trying to decide between 2 options.

 

Option 1: VIZIO S4251w-B4 5.1 Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer and Satellite Speakers for $278

Option 2: Yamaha RX-V371 $150 and Monoprice 5.1 speakers for $100 = $250

 

I know option 2 would probably be suggested bc of the upgrades you could do down the road but right now I'm just concerned with sound quality. The reason I thought about the Vizio is bc my room is so cramped right now that I hated the thought of running wires around my room but I still wanted that 5.1 sound that engulfs you in a movies. Also, I know very little about audio except what I have learned these past few weeks. So I guess the main question is will there be much sound quality difference between the 2?

For such a small room, 5.1 is really kind of over the top; not really workable.


I would suggest that you just use 2.0 or 2.1.


The Onkyo TX-8020 is $159 from Amazon, and the Dayton B652 speakers are $40 per pair.


Those are actually good speakers, believe it or not. The crazy low price makes it hard to accept, but they are good ones.


I bought a pair based on their Stereophile review, and they replaced some Boston speakers that cost over $200.


Forget the crappy soundbar; that is not the way to go.

First off with only $250-$280 to spend realize any purchase you are making that it is a huge compromise.


I personally would rather see you leave with option 2. Better connectivity and all around a better starting point, and it will be able to offer Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio.


Honestly speaking its not hard to run speaker wires around the room along the walls, especially in a bedroom.


IGNORE THE SUGGESTION ABOVE!!! It will result in HORRIBLE sound as you will be missing a center channel and that stereo receiver will not know where to send the sound that is meant for center channel speakers which is 75%-80% of audio in surround sound TV shows and Movies. It results in you having to turn up the volume in dialogue scenes and turn it down during action scenes.


Stereo receivers are only good for music

Thanks for the replies. I guess my concern was the receiver. It seemed like all the AVRs had mixed reviews in the price range.

Not true, as long as the playback device that is being used, then it will downmix it.

The 522 is not looking that good - too many lower star reviews

I'd go with option 2 if that's your max budget. Stay away from soundbars, they over promise and under deliver. My old Sony DAVS-880 I used to have (HTIB) sounded FAR better than a Yamaha YSP-2200 that I bought, tried out, and returned. Let us know if you don't mind spending more, we can point you to better systems that will fit well in a small room, and still perform very good if you move it to a larger room.

Yea it's pretty much my max budget unfortunately. I overspent on the TV. I should have budgeted it out better.

You mentioned the AJ speakers. I haven't listened to them, but they get rave reviews here so I would consider changing your speaker choice to them. If that means buying only a pair of bookshelf speakers or just one center channel to begin with, you will probably be glad you went this route by the time you are finished. People usually advise to stay away from their subwoofer though.

Yea they had the BS21s at walmart for 78 and I have a $gift card there. I didn't know if that was a good deal bc they are the lowest AJ speakers.

For the price they are better than your other options listed. And since this is a HT set-up primary go with a subwoofer

I didn't mean go without a sub, I meant don't buy the AJ sub. Sorry I should have been clearer on that. The Polk 505 or Bic 12'' seem to be good options for the money.
