5.1 or 7.1

354 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  HPforMe
I am thinking of getting a Tosh A1. Can someone explain if my 2 back surround speakers will be in use with an optical, analog, or HDMI output? Also if I decide to puchase can I get the firmware upgrades via disc before I buy the actual unit.

Also my tv only has a DVI input will this work with an HDMI to DVI adapter?

Thanks

TV will work with the HDMI DVI adapter.

Check this site as you can download the upgrade and burn it to disk (one poster has a link for his site).

Back surrounds are used with both optical (DTS conversion) and analog. About the center back - try We Were Soldiers - has DTS 6.1 (through optical) and sounds great.
Hi, MHopkins!

A lot depends on your receiver. HDMI audio will work only if you have a receiver with both an HDMI input and output (the output would be connected to an HDMI->DVI adapter or cable). For 7.1 sound, your receiver will either need Dolby IIx processing, which can expand 5.1 to 7.1, or DTS ES processing for disks with DTS ES tracks, as HPforMe mentioned.

Cheers!

Hi, MHopkins!

By the way, we're still hoping/waiting for disks that will address all 7.1 chanels discretely via multichannel PCM audio over HDMI. Unfortunately, none have yet been released, as far as I'm aware.

Good Luck!

I have the pio 1015 will it work with this receiver? I was just wondering about the HDMI to DVI because I was reading another post and people seemed to be having problems.
Like many others have done, you can also split the two surrounds with a y adaptor and send the surround info to the rear surrounds as well.

My understanding and anybody can correct me but if you use the coaxial or optical route with the A1 your DD+ or TrueHD track will be converted to DTS 5.1. Now interesting on your receiver (as on my Yamaha receiver) if you use the DTS:Neo6 processing of your system it will send a discreet signal through the 6th speaker (if you set your system for 6.1). If you use the seven speaker set up the same discreet sound will be sent through the center back (6) and 7th speaker (i.e., the seventh is not discreet). This is one way you don't have to use a y adapter. Note that it is likely the speakers won't display on your receiver as being used because the flags have not been properly set. For example, on the We Were Soldiers DTS 6.1 track it doesn't show up that my center back is being used but it IS definitely being used (and very nicely so I might add).
