5.1 setup w/ comcast cable

i have a comcast 2-tuner dvr for my cable box. i'm trying to get 5.1 surround from my speakers i just set up. right now i have an HDMI cable running from the comcast dvr to my tv. This has supplied video and sound from my tv speakers. i just added a digital coax from the comcast box to the insignia receiver. why can't i receive sound from my 6 speakers? Do i just need to change some settings on the receiver or am i completely missing a cable connection? i didn't think i needed to run a cable from my tv to the receiver.

A digital connection from the box to the receiver is the way to do it. What box and receiver do you have?

it works now. thanks :) . i have the $130 Insignia 6 channel receiver from best buy ;)
