5.1 to 7.1 question...

940 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  tkdee
When you have a proper 7.1 channel set up, what happens when you play 5.1 or 6.1 content? What speakers does the amp use for "surround'? Back ones or side ones? Just curious, because I'm planning on doing an entire 7.1 setup, although most of the time it will be used for 5.1 content. Not sure if it matters but it will be a Denon AVR-2308 over HDMI.

It would use the "side surrounds". The back surrounds would be unique to a 7.1 setup. Of course, if your receiver has Dolby Pro Logic IIx, it may matrix the 5.1 signal to 7.1.

I assume you are planning to position your speakers per the Dolby guideline for a 7.1 listening array. If you currently have a 5.1 set up, then you may may have to reposition your current surrounds depending on where they are located.

If you use DPLIIx, then as I understand, it does not alter the front 3 channels, L,C, and R, but does reallocate the two channels of surround information from a 5.1 source across the 4 surround speakers in a 7.1 set up.

All you need to do is engage DPLIIx on your receiver or PrePro to "drive" all 7.1 channels.

Just as a note this isn't true for TrueHD or DTS-MA sources. Some receivers can matrix these to 7.1, but not all of them using DPLIIx or NEO:6.

I believe that the Onkyo 705 can while the 605 cannot for example.
