So, I have a living room and a grand plasma wanting some more sound. Up until now I have had a "highend"-stereosetup so I am quite anxious when considering a 5.2 setup, but, my W wants something with surround sound, my wallet wants something cheaper and so:

I have been looking at the ned SVS STS-01 speakers, combined with center and SBS for surrounds and maybe 2 PC12NSD's for depth and excursion.

But how good are those babies when it comes to playing Diana Krall - Live in Paris with credibility?

Are there other similarly priced alternatives that can rival the SVS' sound?

And lastly, what AV-receiver would you recommend for the job of driving these speakers? Yammi?

how many watts are you assuming per channel? how big is the room? why not just 5.1? (that makes me assume its a pretty large family room)

Dual subs is a good idea. It will help flatten the frequency response over more listening positions. It will also increase headroom of the system, allowing each sub to play less loudly for the same "combined" output. This decreases distortion and improves sound quality.

However, having dual subs is not referred to as "5.2". The ".1" in 5.1, 6.1, 7.1, etc., refers to the LFE track in the recording. The number of subwoofers reproducing the LFE track, (and any other re-directed bass from the Bass Management system), is irrelevant to what is in the track.

5.2?

I think you are confused...even having dual subs still means its 5.1

There are some systems (more expensives) that do have .2 (stereo sub functionality and I do not think its different then .1) though but I doubt you where thinking that.

I am thinking two subs in a 5.1 - I know there is only mono LFE.

I have been looking at SCS(M) 5.0 from SVS and they look fine, I have heard them earlier on and felt they were good, but then I saw that Ascend are selling packages for 998$, the problem for me is the fact that I am based in Europa and can't compare them. How good are those 340SE's compared with SVS and other speakers that are natural to compare them to?

I see they also sell Rythmik subs, would a 15" be "enough", why is 12 and 15 inch priced exactly the same?

The 15" looks to be a $100 or more then the 12"

which exact models are you looking at? Links?

Rythmik makes very good subs! You will not go wrong with that decision.
