It's very filmlike, but I agree that there is a certain lack of resolution with oddly coarse grain. Somehow I have a difficult time believing this is all they could get out of a 35mm anamorphic film, especially since it seems to be in pretty good condition otherwise. There's also some haloing that I don't think is of the optical kind.

Grainy film is faster film. Faster film needs less light, therefore requiring no or very little lighting setups.


The French New Wave films were frequently made on extremely small budgets. I find the look of the Blu-ray to probably be quite accurate.
