I have a 5 channel system setup, and I am not satisfied with the bass output when listening to music. I have a 110 watt/channel amp. Will a powered sub woofer give me more bass when listening to music, particularily at low volumns or does a subwoofer only help explosions from movies? Will a 50 watt sub woofer be large enough? Can I place the subwoofer behind my listening seat?

The sub will do two things... take some of the power stain/drain off the main amp and provide a rock solid bass.

Set up and positioned properly, you wish that you'd done it sooner.

IMO... I'd go with a minimum of 100 watts for the sub. The more power you can provide, the better. A good avg. power is ~250 w.

A sub will also add 'impact' to movies (DVD's).

Thanks,

What is proper position for the sub woofer? I have no room to place it in front of me; small room 10 x 15. The entire front wall with TV, stand, front and center speakers uses all the space. 3.5 ft in front of that is a coffee table, then the couch. From the listening position to the center speaker is about 9.5 ft. The only place I have available is behind the couch in front of my drum set. Unfortunate space limitations, but the best that I can do.

Keeping it simple.. usually a corner is best. But it really could almost go anywhere.

I also have limited space. I placed mine conveniently under a corner table.

The wife gave positioning approval... and that's what matters most! :)

If you have a lot of freedom to place the sub in the best location, try this:

Place the sub in your favorite listening position and play it at normal levels. Walk around the room until you find the place where the sub sounds the best. Put the sub in that location.
