<$500 5.1 setup w/ floor speakers???

1250 Views 20 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  gab2409
I'll probably buy the Athena Micra when it's available at Best Buy but I was wondering if anyone can recommend a set of floor speakers for a small living room w/ the Micras? I understand that the Micra is already a complete set but I figured that I can purchase the components separately??? I guess I like the look of floor speakers.

Is this even possible??? Am i way off??? I've never owned a receiver or speakers before...thanks!!!

if that were my budget, I'd check out the offerings from fluance. they seem pretty sweet. also, b and h has the jbl northridge set with towers for like 575 shipped. I've heard the center that comes with it isnt very good, but I would imagine that it would be competitive within your budget.
it's all relative. I have a sony/dayton sub setup that I am about to upgrade. for what I paid(well under 500), it's great. will something that's more expensive sound better? sure. that isn't really worth talking about.

You can easily catch the Polk R30's or R50's(if still available) in your price range. I was quite inmpressed iwth the R30's for their size.

OK, since you were asking for actual advice from people who aren't speaker snobs, here is what I did in that same price range.

Infinity Primus: (Closeout from CC if you can still find them)

250s (floorstanders) - $100 ea.

150s (bookshelves) - $50 ea.

C25 (center) - $100

Athena P300 sub - $100 (From Amazon.com)

There ya go - An impressive $500 5.1 setup that retailed for over $1k. Ignore the speaker snobs here who say you can't buy anything decent without spending thousands. Obviously you can return those if you don't like them as well.

Thank you to those who made valuable recommendations and not sarcasm. now i have a lot of thinking to do. maybe i should stick with a 2.1 system for the interim and add on later. Probably the athena sub and the two floor speakers. is the center channel that important??

If you are considering 2.1, take a look at JBL E80 for front L/R speakers. J&R and B&H had great prices for these. JBL E60s are a little cheaper, but I would suggest going with E80s. Later you can add EC25 or EC35 for center channel.

the e60s are a lot cheaper - $40/each. are the e80s much better?

Good recommendation.

You might be able to find the 360's instead of the 250's at a low price as well. Sometimes they show up on the net pretty cheap. My setup is like Tebo's and sounds great (although I have a different sub).

IMO don't let anyone talk you into buying a 2.1 system now and upgrading later. To me that is the worst advice you can get.

5 Primus speakers are going to sound a hell of a lot better than a couple of front speakers from some "respected" Internet direct brand when you are watching a movie. You want the whole 5.1 effect now for your $500 - why compromise thinking gee I have a nice set of "more respectable speakers that others on AVS forums do not make fun of" now?

If and when I do upgrade down the road I don't think I will want to be matching a pair of $500 front speakers.

I've got 3 athena AS-C1's across the front (currently $70-95 shipped on ebay) and a pair of AS-B1s for surround that I got for 100 shipped. my total in so far (first C1 at 120 shipped from AA last xmas, piecing the rest together as money comes available) is $360. throw in a dayton 12" for $130 + shipping and your at almost exactly 500...
If you are going to use the Micra center, then you really must stick to Athena for mains. Otherwise, you will have non-matching timbre across the front stage, which sounds terrible.

Another option is to hold off on surround for now, and spend your budget on two much better speakers than you could afford if you went 5.1.

If possible listen to both of them (and any others you are considering) and then make a decision. Many stores carry them, so it should be possible to audition them.
Much as I hate to suggest ID, I would stretch the budget just a very little bit and pre-order two pairs of these: http://www.**********/products_produc...s&product=94.1

This assumes you have the patience to wait a while. It would be well worth it I would venture to guess. Then, add the matching center in a year or two. No rush there.

Or, check eBay for a good used pair of Paradigm Monitor 7 v.3's.
hi all, i just got the micra 6 system and i was wondering if anybody knows if the ws-100's would sound good with this micra 6 system to make it a 7.1 system on a pioneer vsx-816
