Hello,

I'm looking for a sub to compliment, not overpower, my new stereo system.

Denon AVR X1000  receiver

Focal Chorus 717v (left/right)

I am looking for something under $500 (new/used/refurbished).  The main uses for the system are Music/Movies (80/20) so a very musical sub is preferable.  I plan to start out with one sub and work my way up to a second sub (eventually replacing my receiver).  I would definitely like an active sub to cut down on price and wiring as the space I have for components is limited.

The room I will use it in is about 250 sq ft opening up to a kitchen (100 sqft) in an apartment building. Floor and ceiling are concrete, walls are drywall and brick.

Preferably I would like to buy a sub from a company where I can make monthly payment rather than all at once.  Any input is greatly appreciated!

Thank you for your time,

Seth

We call that a credit card.

According to SVS' FAQs :
Quote:
... SVS also supports PayPal’s Bill Me Later (which offers 6 months same as cash financing for any orders over $99).
If that works for you, get the SVS SB-1000 or PB-1000 ($499 for either one, shipped).

SVS offers free return shipping within 45 days, so if you try it and don't like it, return it and the in-home demo costs you $0.

SVS sb-1000 get recommended a lot for your situation.
I saw that and am very interested in SVS but did not know that they had a payment plan...sounds dangerous.  ;)

Also, for my apartment what would be benefits/drawbacks of pb vs sb?

Ported will play louder. Your room isn't huge so either will be loud enough to piss off your neighbors.

I am less worried about broadcasting brown notes (Southpark anybody?) across my entire apartment complex and more worried about crisp, unmuddled bass support.

The SB-1000 probably would be a touch more defining with bass notes, but the PB-1000 also has the advantage of lower extension, a plus for movie watching. And if you like your bass very loud (if you consider yourself a bass head), then I think you should definitely lean more toward the PB-1000. Dual SB-1000s would do fine in a the space you describe for the average listener, but a bass head might need the good bit extra output of the PB-1000s.

So how much of a bass head are you?

Good points by cel145. Once you answer his question then you have the answer to which sub to choose.

Okay, you made me laugh...I haven't thought about that episode of Southpark in a long time.

I'm a part-time bass head I suppose.  Watching action/kung fu...bass.  Listening to crappy party music...bass.

Everything else I listen to I just want to hear the bass, not have uncontrollable bass-induced bowel movements.  Thanks for the help everybody.  I think I'm leaning towards ported subs to get the bass I want for the next year before I buy a second sub...then I can turn the volume control down a little bit.

Save up $375 and buy the HSU STF-1.  This includes shipping.  If you have to finance a subwoofer, it means you can't afford it.  I am not aware of any companies that offer financing.  Pretend credit cards are like herpes....you can get them, but do you really want to?

Lame sauce.  I will not use a credit card because I pay that off monthly (who the hell wants 19.99% interest?!).  I am financing because I'd rather not pay it off all at once though I could conceivably afford to buy 2 subs right now.  Also, I do not want a sub that I will want to replace within a year.  Why would I have a pair of $1500 speakers and a sub-par subwoofer?  It would present a bottleneck that I would want to solve as soon as possible.  I think I'm going to stick with the PB1000s even though that PB12 at $700 is calling my name.

Thank you for your input.

Then the PB-1000 is the way to go. It'll be fun for watching the four to five star movies on this list . And you'll be able to host your own parties with good, loud "crappy party music". (lol)

And you should be impressed by it. You'd have to spend $1000 or more MSRP at BestBuy to get a sub of comparable quality. The SVS subs are THAT good

Thanks for the movie list!  I'll probably watch Tron when I get my sub...best bass-heavy soundtrack on the list!   PB-1000s here I come!

You know what?  Before I dig in and buy PB1000s I'm going to audition some ReactionAudio subs.  They have introductory pricing right now and 30 day auditions. $700 for two 12" 200 watt RMS subs.  Or I might try one of the Turbo 12" subs. They look nice too.   http://reaction-audio.myshopify.com/

Any mfg that uses the word "turbo" to describe their subwoofer, probably should be avoided.

Dual dual 12" subs might be a pretty sweet option for your room.  If you go that route be sure to keep us informed.
