On my HD Set Top Box, what setting should I have this on? Full-time 1080i? Does the Toshiba upconvert it to 540p or what?

Toshibas upconvert 480i or 480p signals to 540p. HD should be viewed at 1080i.

So I can set the HD Box to 1080i and the television will accept it without converting it to 540p?

Setting your STB to 1080i is right for hd, but if you watch sd through the STB you will not be able to access all the screen modes. Some STB's such as the Motorolas let you set the box to pass pictures in a native 480i resolution to the set in either 480i or 480p, while sending 720p or 1080i shows at 1080i. This is better than setting everything to 1080i. You can select to view signals received via component or HDMI at 480p at either 540p or 1080i; I can't see much difference between the two.


If your STB that all channels, both native sd and hd broadcasts, be set at a single resolution, then (1) set the STB at 1080i, and (2) use a splitter and watch channels 2-100 using the tv's tuner.

You have to choose a setting on the Toshiba as well. Your choices are 540p and 1080i. If you select 1080i on the box and the set, it will show everything at 1080i. If you select 1080i on the box and 540p on the set, then it will convert it to 540p. Like cgw said, if your box will let you choose more than one resolution at a time(usually called pass through)then choose 480i and 1080i. Your set will convert all sd material(480i) to 540p and all HD material(1080i) will remain 1080i assuming you set the tv's resolution accordingly. cgw's solution on sd material about splitting the signal is the best as far as PQ results for sd material. That being said, i run my Tosh 46H83 at 1080i on the box and the set to keep from switching inputs all the time when surfing.

This is not true. The only thing that the Toshiba converts to 540p is either 480i or 480p. Any signal other than that gets converted to 1080i by the set.

Well then, that would probably explain why i can't see a difference when switching between 540p and 1080i on a HD signal. So i'm sure you are correct RicP. Thanks for confirming that 1080i and 720p remain 1080i regardless of the sets setting. That is useful info.
