I am sorry if this has been covered before.

I just got the infocus x1 for 10 day evaluation sent to my home because I cannot find one store that actually displays any FP's.

I am looking at the 5700, Nec 1100, optoma h56 and maybe the sony hs20. Would much rather have DLP, but may be willing to go for an LCD if I cant get what I want in my price range in DLP.

Heres my issue. The x1 is rated at 1100 lumens, I put it in my basement where it will be and was playing with it. For the price, I actually like it alot, and can only imagine with any of the above projectors, the picture/colors will be much better.

The biggest issue I had was the room needed to be pretty dark, any more than very little ambient light and the picture quality was dramatically reduced.

The 5700 is rated at 1000 lumens by the same company, can I assume that the 5700 can even tolerate less ambient light?

My purposes for a projector will be:

DVD Movies

Sports HD and SD

Video Games

For the Movies and Video games, I have no problem putting the lights all the way out, but I often have people over for football and dont really want to have to make a room pitch dark to view. Dimming the lights is fine, but off is not.

The 5700 is rated at 1000 lumens by the same company, can I assume that the 5700 can even tolerate less ambient light?

Since I have no access to view projectors, can anyone help me out with this issue?

In that price range, is there a projector considered "the best" for some ambient light, not daylight, but some recesses lights on a dimmer?

Any help would be appreicated.

Erik,

The 5700 is one of the brightess projectors out there. I have a light controlled room but keep the lights dimmed (bright enough to walk around, talk, etc) for football games and the picture is great. Well, as great as TV can look blown up on a 92" screen.

I am sure others will chime in, but for the money, I can't imagine a projector that is better for football, gaming and movies.

Should be plenty bright and definitely viewable with ambient light. For instance while the NEC 1100 and the infocus 5700 have similar lumen ratings, the infocus in the real world is about twice as bright. Of course that's also the reason that the NEC has better contrast.

I got the 5700 precisely because I had some ambient light issues and it has performed admirably under these circumstances. Only the Sanyo plv-70 is better but the 5700 is almost as bright and puts out (at least in my opinion) a nicer picture.

The X-1 puts out about 500 lumens in video mode - the 1100 lumen rating is ONLY in presentation mode. The 5700 is considerably brighter than the X1 plus does not have the clear segment in the color wheel that desaturates the colors in the X1.

FYI, the contrast ratio on the X-1 also goes down to less than half its rated spec in video mode as well. That's what happens when a business projector is used for home theater.

Out of all the projectors you mention, the 5700 is the brightest by a long shot.

Good Luck!
