Newbie here. I have a Hitiachi 57S500 and I just got DVE and ran through the basic callibration settings. I have 2 basic inputs going into the TV, Sony progreesive scan DVD (componet on Vid 1) and a Sony DirecTV/Tivo (S-Videoc on Vid 3). Rememebr this is my first time through this, and here are my settings:

Setting Vid1 Vid3

Contrast 50 56

Brightness 60 50

Color 53 45

sharp 0 0

Color Temp Med Med

Black Enhan. Mid Mid

Edge Enhan. Med Med

Color dec.

Red 50 43

Green 46 43

Color 53 45

(if not listed then set at default)

Now, the brightness & contrast settings were a bit confusing, as was the sharpness aling with edge enhancement. Also using the color cellophane mask (while looking at the DVE template) the blue and the red looked as it should, but the green did not no matter what I did. When I used the TV's color mask in the Color Decoder section (while looking at the DVE template) the red, blue and green all looked as they were supposed to.

I am just looking for suggestions on setting modifications and any other suggestions that would help me optimize my picture. Any help is appriciated.

Thanks,

XH

edit: Sorry, the table is not appearing as I had intened. The first number is the setting for Vid 1 ( the DVD) the second number is for Vid 3 (the Tivo ).

hey, just wanted to say i know exactly how you feel. i've had my 51s500 for about 5 months now, and i'm still learning everything. going through waves of tweaking from month to month .

anyway, the first thing i can tell you about your current settings that a lot of people will probably agree with is to turn some of them down even more. if you haven't gotten into the ISF menu and adjusted SUBBRT and SUBCNT, then you should be turning your your contrast way down (i'm assuming you haven't, and probably don't even know what those are right now......don't worry). a lot of people recommend setting contrast somewhere around 30, maybe a little lower. brightness probably somewhere around 40-50 i think.

what most people agree on is turning all enhancements off.......edge and black. i've turned my black enhance off, but i switch b/w off and low with edge enhancement depending on my mood .

before getting into the ISF menu, i had my color decoder settings at Red 26, Green 43, Color 50 i think. the red was definitely much lower than the others, but if you think yours looks fine, then you don't really need to adjust.

just a note, i adjusted my settings using component cables for both dvd and cable inputs, so they may be a bit different. best thing i can say to do is just keep messing with user menu settings until you learn what works best for you, but you can also search everywhere around this forum for some great advice. check this thread out for some advice on using the calibration tools. and if you start wondering about ISF settings, spend some more time learning about your tv first, and read everything you can find on this forum about them before you start changing things.

hope that helped some.

Yes ...turn off edge enhance, black enhance lower contrast ~30 and raise sharpness. The settings should be calibrated with the enhancements off ....otherwise you are fighting these when adjusting settings like sharpness and color. Get the user settings dialed in as good as possible before bothering with service menu tweaks. Those should be viewed as fine tuning beyond user menu. Get aquainted with dve test patterns and you'll get the most from your set. Not an overnight thing ....takes a lot of reading on these boards.

Thanks guys. I watched TV last nigt (through the tivo) and everyithng looked out of focus which drove me nuts. I will try turning the sharpness up and adjusting the contrast and turning off enhancements. Any thoughts on the green problem? I still see green in skin tones.

Thanks again,

XH
