At least they are thinking about a solution to the obsolescense issue. Plus they are not giving me any BS that these are HiScan sets and not HDTV. Lets see what kind of announcement they make.

From Sony:
In an effort to protect substantial investments in properties broadcast
as
HDTV the 5c copy protection method has been agreed to by several
entities.
This copyright protection does not apply to all HDTV broadcasts, only
those
the presenter wishes to protect. It does not prohibit viewing the
material,
it does downgrade it however.
The implementation of the 5c copyright protection was decided on after
the
design, manufacture, and sale of several of our HDTV devices. SONY is
looking into what can be done and we expect an official answer as soon
as
it is developed which we will share with our customers. In the mean
time
please enjoy your HDTV and remember all HDTV broadcasting will not
include
5c copyright protection.
Thank you for your interest in SONY products and services.

MESSAGE: I purchased a 53HS10 last month as an HDTV capable TV. Now I
hear
that with the new 5C technology my TV will no longer be able to
transmit
full 1080i resolution because of copyright issues and will only
transmit
down resolved signals.
I expect Sony to upgrade my TV so it stays HDTV compatible and
transmits
1080i. If that means upgrading the inputs to the TV then that's what I
expect from Sony. There is a 53HS10/20/30 egroup on Yahoo which has 602
members. They are all concerned about this issue and we plan to take
action
if Sony does not take steps to make our sets HDTV compatible. Please
see
the group link below. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sonyhs10/messages
I and 600 other Sony HS series owners expect this otherwise a) we will
boycott Sony products and b) you will potentially have a class action
law
suit on your hands.
Thank you
