Considering the Dwin TV3+ because of convenience of the media box, but it has the 6 color segment wheel. The newer dlps like Sharp 12K and Infocus 7205 have the 7 segment wheel.

What are the major differences in performance between the 6 and 7 segment wheel? Black levels? Less rainbows? etc...

The 7 segment wheel is supposed to help reduce the dithering associated with DLP projectors. By itself it is not really a selling point. In other words, if you have seen the Dwin and like the picture and setup convenience, don't let the fact that it doesn't have the 7 segment wheel stop you from getting that unit. All of the projectors you listed are excellent units.

The 7th color on the wheel is a dark green. So, it also improves the greens which have been slightly neonish in the past. Although not a deal breaker and if someone didn't point it out, you wouldn't be bothered by it at all.

I would respectfully disagree with Jason. Based on the my impressions at the Denver shootout, I think it is a major selling point for anyone looking for the best possible picture.

Yes but that arguement only holds for the same basic model. In other words, if the Dwin has many features that the customer is looking for (lens shift, 2 box setup, etc.....), then what I was saying is that the lack of a 7 segment wheel should not stop him from getting that unit.

If however, the Dwin came with either a 6 or 7 segment wheel, then I would concur that the 7 segment would be worth considering.

That was the point I was trying to make.

I believe that the theory of the 7-segment wheel is that it reduces the "temporal dithering" artifact, especially on very dark scenes.

This artifact is when you can see the DLP mirrors turning on and off. It is especially noticable on dark surfaces where the color varies slightly from pixel to pixel--hence some pixels will slimmer more than others.

Since green is the largest component of light, and the color that our visual systems use to discern detail, having a richer range of greens available helps to reduce this artifact.

I would suggest that people who do not notice this artifact may find the 7-segment wheel less important.

Doesn't the darker color segment also help to increase contrast as well? The HD2+ boxes without the new wheel only seem to get about 25% more contrast over the HD2 design.

Later,
