I watched this blu-ray and The Last Emperor and this black and white sixty year old movie gave me a more satisfying experience. Both are worthy upgrade from DVD of course but the Third Man has no annoying EE applied. There is still dirt and dust visible on the transfer. For now this is the best they can do.

One thing I have an issue and I think this is a legitimate complain and that is the cardboard packaging and sleeves. Using this kind of flimsy packaging is not going to be popular among buyers and collectors. They get damaged so easily that ordering them online and hoping your mailman does not shove your Criterion blu-ray in your mailbox is a crapshoot.

Criterion please don't get cheap on us. I have about 120 CC DVDs and all of them are still in pristine condition. Still well preserved and packagings intact. Still collectible. Those standard Blu-ray cases are the best way to go. Or a steelbook

I can't believe how good the DVD looks. Yes, the Blu-ray is superior but not by a landslide.

The BD looks much more natural and film-like though; you can see how the DVD encode stuggles with handling film grain. The image takes on a bit of a video look - although still good for DVD. However, the BD looks like pure film.

Exactly.

Now if we could get Carol Reed's other great film, Odd Man Out (which I believe is actually his better work) I'll be a very happy camper.

They have done this quite a few times, Kurosowa, Salo, Brazil, just to name a few.

The 2-disc DVD to me seems to have even more DNR than the original edition. The Blu-ray is a very nice improvement over both versions and I'm happy to see all the grain intact. Not sure I understand the comments that the blu-ray is not superior by a landslide, unless trolling.
