Hi all,

I have been a proud Mitsubishi 65809 owner for many many many years. It finally took a crap after 6 months of warming up issues and picture jittering. Now I'm stuck with no main tv and want to order or pick something up this weekend.

I am a size guy and the Mitsubishi treated me good for all this time so am looking at the WD-73837. Everything I read the picture quality is outstanding for a DLP. My question is does it even compare to a plasma? I can get a PN58B650 for about the same price, but will be sacrficing a lot of size.

I went to my local audio video store and was able to check out the Plasmas (and LCDs) but really liked the picture quality of the Samsung PN58B650. They don't carry DLPS anymore so couldnt look for myself.

What do you guys think? We will be sitting 12 feet away from the screen. Will I be disappointed in the PQ after looking at the Plasmas? On the other end, I may be disappointed with the size reduction going to the 58". Thanks for any input you guys can give.

Oh, it will be used for Blu-ray movies through the PS3, gaming on the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii, and also HDTV content for the late night shows with the wife.

My 65711 has just taken a crap itself (for the second time) so I have been looking for a couple of weeks. I'm most likely going to go with the Samsung 63b590. After having a 65 inch screen for 7 years, its hard to go to a smaller display. Call it screen envy or whatever want, but I need it to be big. With that being said, I think plasma has the best picture going right now for what I watch (sports). I think within the next three years Plasma will be outdated, but for now its the bomb.

I hear ya Scott. I really would hate to go down in size, but don't want to be disappointed with the picture quality too. The 73" sounds really impressive size-wise, but the plasmas just have such a good pic. Hard to believe it will all be outdated, but that's how this industry goes. I was looking at the 63" also, but is about $600 more than the 58". lol. Did you find a really good price anywhwere? Could you PM me if you did?

How about getting the Mits fixed? How much would that cost?

I have a 65833 it was the biggest that would fit in the space I had. I could not be happier with the picture quality especially with Blu Ray and over the air HD. I have not seen a plasma in anyone's home that I would trade for, the DLP looks much better in a house than in a store (maybe it's the florescent lighting ?) If I were you I would go for either a 65 or larger especially from your distance I would think you would be more disappointed with the smaller size than any difference in (potential) picture quality.

Thanks CHarlottesailor! So you really don't think the DLP has an "inferior" picture quality after viewing other people's plasma sets? This is the kind of feedback I am looking for because I'm not able to view this DLP at the store. I really want the large screen size since that is what I'm used to (plus my entertainment center is made for a large TV, although I'd have to get a stand). And I have been a Loyal Mitsubishi owner for some time now, it held up well until now.

Also, the 73" 73837 is still $400 cheaper than the 63" 555 series Samsung plasma. The size difference is just insane even up from the 63.

I just have the fear that after viewing these Plasmas that I won't be as happy with the PQ, and I want this to be my last bigscreen purchase in the next 5-7 years.

Two of my neighbors have 50" plasmas and one has a 42" lcd. When viewing HD material I think those 3 are all about equal, some minor differences. Both they and I think my 65833 is a better viewing experience. Maybe if you sat 3 feet away from the plasma vs the DLP you might notice some difference but from 8 to 15 feet I can not tell the difference.

This is my third mits big screen I started with a 45" which lasted for 15 years, then I bought a 55" wide screen CRT HD but that had no HDMI and a friend I rented my house to had the stock market on all day causing burn in. When I had an another problem with that set I opted to replace it instead of repair because of the burn in. I choose the mits 65833 because of my prior experience with mits; price compared to other 65' sets and the 65833 has two 75 ohm inputs so I can get cable without a box and connect an external antenna for over the air HD (cable company wants to charge extra for network HD, a rip off). Sorry a little off topic, I considered going smaller to get an LCD to hang on the wall but I went larger and am glad I did as I said before both the neighbors and I think my picture quality is just as good as their 50' plasmas and size does matter. Can't speak to the 73" but I am more than happy with my 65" and would not trade it for a 50" plasma even if they gave me some money with the 50". Just my opinion

Yay! I found a local store that carries the WD-73837! I don't think they really know how to setup TV's because the picture looked really washed out (kinda faded I guess, not as vibrant) compared to even the 65" version. The salesman told me it's because it's a bigger set and that's why. From all my reading on this site, it seems the picture should be outstanding if adjusted properly correct? For some reason it just didn't look much better than my old 65809, but the smaller versions of the same TV did.

If I go in tomorrow, I can get this 73837 set for $2050, and also a really nice looking Bello stand for $50 below cost.

My other alternative is the 63" Samsung plasma PN63B550. But this he would only go down to $2887, said that samsung wont let them sell below that. What you think of this price?

So between the two need some advice? TV will be used for lots of PS3/Xbox 360 gaming, movie watching, and late night HD TV with the wife.

Thanks!!

There is a ton of adjustments on the TV it could be out of adjustment. Also these TVs don't do as good of a job in displaying non HD material as the old ones. Maybe the salesman will let you go to the menu and adjust the picture, also play the same BD material on both sets

The Mitsbishi DLP's play great once calibrated. We purchased a 73" after our 65" WS65903 had a blue convergence issue. It was down for a while but I was able to replace the IC's and a few resistors and got it running again.

The DLP's dont have as deep of a black level. The diamonds are supposed to have better blacks but I havent been able to get a good look at one yet. If there is some light in the room the blacks will look darker. With the blacks not as deep or dark you will have a better time in dark scenes in video games such as Fallout 3. I also stated that it could use a calibration. Out of the box the picture was a bit blue, the lips looked off and the faces a bit yellow/green. We purchased an eye-one and calibrated it ourselves and it looks great now. The colors were worse with the standard definition content. Also, you have to be ready to replace bulbs for it which I believe are around $150 now. They are supposed to last approximately 2,000 hours as far as I can recall.
