6600GT and TheaterTek

I've been using TTek/ffdshow for a couple years now with an older Radeon video card. I've been pretty happy with the results on my 42" plasma TV.

I've read a lot on this forum about how the new version of TTek (which I've had for a while) is "amazing" with the new NVidia codec that is used. Most report that they no longer need to use ffdshow.

Since I now have a 110" front projector setup, I really want to make sure I'm getting the most that I can out of my HTPC. So I just upgraded to a 6600GT (it's in the mail) and would like to know how people have it configured. Should I:

1. Abandon ffdshow?

2. Use overlay or VMR9?

3. Enable NVidia postprocessing?

3a. If so, what settings are recommended?

Rest assured that I will test these things myself, but I was hoping for some guidance so that I have a good place to start. I am particularly interested in opinions on question number 2 above. Most comments I've read indicate the people, regardless of video card, seem to prefer VMR9. But I can tell you that with my current configuration, overlay gives a much better picture. I'm anxious to see if that changes with the new 6600GT card.

I'm assuming, of course, that getting the NVidia video card to match the NVidia codec used by TTek will give me improved PQ. Hope I'm right, otherwise that was $100 down the toilet!

Thanks,

Phil

I also have a 6600GT, so Ill tell you what I am using. I am in no way an expert in this area however, so keep that in mind.

1. I still use FFDSHOW as my second post processor, after the NVidia one

2. I use VRM9

3. Yes, I have NVidia and FFDSHOW post proccessing enabled

3a. For NVidia: Automatic deinterlace control, Prefer VRM9 Deinterlace Mode, Prefer VRM9

Thanks for the info.

Actually just visited the TheaterTek web site on a whim. Read through the setup thread and got an answer to my own questions!

And actually, the thread explains that with some video cards, including the 6600GT, that NVida Postprocessing does not need to be enabled because those features are included in the hardware.

In the examples given, two scenarios apply here. If no ffdshow is desired, these are the recommended settings:

"I've got an nVidia 6600GT on XP SP2 and just want the easiest setup for a great picture"

Select VMR9 for all renders

Select Smart for your De-interlacing option

Check Allow Subtitle Movement

Check DXVA in the Advanced Video Page

Check FullScreen in the Advanced Video Page

Check YUVMixing in the Advanced Video Page

If ffdshow is desired, then:

"I've got state of the art hardware and just want the absolute best picture possible. PS I love to tweak."

Grab and install the FFDShow version as mentioned above.

Select VMR9 for all renders

Select Auto for your De-interlacing option

Check FullScreen in the Advanced Video Page

Check YUVMixing in the Advanced Video Page

Select FFDShow as your Post Processor in the first Post Processing dropdown.

I guess I should have checked the TTek web site first. Oh well, hopefully this will be helpful to others.

Thanks,

Phil

Honestly, the best thing is to try all the various options. Overlay vs. VMR9 may have slightly different picture quality, depending on video card settings, but I haven't noticed that much of a difference. I never used ffdshow, because I have been happy with the picture quality of TT alone. Of course, I only have a 56" DLP rear projection display.
