Usually, you should use the largest diameter bass driver you can tolerate looking at in your ceiling. For background levels, bass is important, because you perceive bass poorly at lower levels, and the speakers have to be fuller sounding. Some 6" speakers have long excursion and actually have decent bass, but an 8" driver will generally provide more low-level thumpage.
