Which speakers participate in multichannel SACD or DVD-A in a 7.1 configuration? I have a VSX-49tx with 7.1 speaker config and am curious about this. I am still in stone ages using CD only...

So is the side surrounds, rear surrounds or both that come into play on Multichannel SACD or DVD-A? Thanks for educating me!

Since multi channel music is 5.1 and you have a 7.1 setup, you can use either the side or rear surrounds.

SACD and DVD-A would probably sound better through monopoles.

Personally, in such a setup I would use monopole rears for the music, and would reserve di/bipole sides for HT.

Does one select which speakers (rear vs. side) to use in their receiver-pre/pro, or does it automatically default to the rears?

You would use the two Rear Surround inputs (instead of the Sides) of your receiver's 7.1 inputs. The Sides therefore don't get a signal, so there is no switching involved.

Eric,

It depends on the receiver/pre-pro. For example: on my processor I can choose sides or rears or both.

Best,

Sanjay
