I am buying the studio 60 speaker with studio 20's for the surround and rear. The dealer was telling me that the surrounds should not be in front of me but behind. He said that the four speakers, 2 surrounds and 2 rears should both be behind my couch or listening area. Everything I have read so far has the 2 surrounds in front of the couch on the left and right.

What is right????

The surrounds will sound best if they are on the sides of the room mounted on the wall preferrable about 4' or so above the listeners head. For best results they should be slightly behind the listener (about 1') if possible.

As for the rears I've read they should be positioned forward facing and aimed down (if they are mounted on a wall). They shouldn't be too far apart and can be above the listener like the sides. I know you should just make sure they are angled down to avoid reflecting off of your TV etc.

jlenz, the best thing to do is experiment with the locations. Also, if you will be listening to any prologic, you probably will not want side speakers in front of your listenning position-include prologic in your tests. Partially byexperimentation & partially due to lack of options, my sides are even with my listenning position and the rears are 2 studs apart-centerred in the rear. I found that 7.1 sounding significantly better with speakers mounted at 5 feet up rather than the more common 6.5 feet.

Good Luck

jlenz,

The most common set-up for 7.1 systems is to have the 2 side speakers directly to your sides and the rear speakers spread out on the back wall. Leon's advice is good: experiment with location before committing to final placement. (Use step-ladders, boxes, cinderblocks, etc. as temporary speaker stands.)

Personally, I don't like hearing surround information in front of me, so I never place any of my surround speakers ahead of the listening position. I wouldn't place the side speakers behind the listening position either; in a 7.1 system, there are 2 rears speakers to take care of the rearward surround imaging.

Best,

Sanjay

Hi,

I will like to know how will the rear center sound like if I place it on the floor? With the tweeter facing upwards towards the ceiling directly behind my couch?

Does anyone think that this is a feasible idea?

Cheers!
