I am currently designing a new home theater and have a budget of $3k for speakers. I will be running a 7.1 ch system, likely powered by a Denon AVR-3803. I would like to have two subs with the system. The company I am working with suggested an Energy Connoisseur system. The system will be 100% dedicated to theater - DVD and television. I am not adverse to in-walls.

Any thoughts on this or an alternate system in this price range?

Look into NHT, Rocket, Axiom, Ascend, Definitive Technology, Klipsch, B&W, M&K, JBL and myriad others in that price range. Your speaker budget is right in the sweet spot for a kickin' theater. There are just thousands of speaker sets you can get for that kind of cash and very few ways to go wrong.

For instance, I've got Def Tech sm350 mains, clr2002 center, bp2x surrounds and bp1.2x back surrounds. They came to under $1600. Then, I've got 2 HSU TN1220HO subs (with bass optimizer and powered by my own amp), for $1100. Consider the price of an amp and it goes over your $3k budget by a few hundred, but would make a killer setup.

There are many choices in that price range. I'm sure you'll get many pushes toward internet-direct (Rockets, Axioms, etc.) as they are big on this forum. My suggestion would be to start with something less than 7.2 and get higher quality LCR now in a 5.1 system. You can (and probably will!!!) upgrade down the road...

I second Sorny's suggestions...although for a sub I'd go with two HSU VTF'3 or one (maybe two if u want to spend the dough) SVS PB2-Plus.

I'd say Rockets would be my first choice....I have a two channel system from Onix and its incredible...I'll actually be going with Def Tech's for HT, but only because I find the higher end speakers by them to be much much better than their lower lines(there's a HUGE difference between the bp2004s and 7001s). Everyone likes different things though.
