71.8* Nvidia Drivers-Issue MCE, help!

537 Views 14 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  mlbdude
I have installed the newest Quatro drivers, and the seem to work fine when I am in desktop mode. Once I run MCE, everything seems to be ok, unless I leave MCE on, unattended for a short period of time. It blank screens and the locks the system. Additionally this also happens when I pause a DVD or song, and come back, same thing.

Now if there is playback going on, or MCE is being used, I don't have this problem. I can play through 10 movies in a row, if I don't leave the system unattended doing nothing for a period of time. I have the screensaver turned off, I am a little confused as to what is going on.

I guess what I am asking is there something I need to do to get these drivers to work properly? Or, should I roll back to a different driver set, and if so which one?

Thanks in advance.

I have yet to find a nVidia beta driver that does not lock up MCE.
Are you saying that I should just roll back to the original purevideo driver set? I am assuming that is what you are saying. :)
75.90 drivers work great for me on MCE2k5
Those lokup for me with my 6600 or 5700. It may also have something to do with the decoder you are using. I am using the NVDVD decoder.
I'm also using nvdvd decoder with an fx5700
The beta drivers from Nvidia's website work fine. but they are not 71.xx

Can you verify your driver version? The beta's on nVidia website are 71.xx but they were just updated.

Also, if you are using a 69.xx version can you verify if 1080i works? I did have success with the pre 71 drivers but those did not work with 1080i.
I am also a tad concerned with the 71.** driver set running idle temps a lot higher than the earlier drivers. It's a problem that still is rearing it's ugly head. I may try to scale up to another driver, the new WHQL 71.90s, and hopefully some of this locking up will subside.

Oh, wow, you're right. Looks like they were just updated yesterday. I've been (am) using the last betas- 67.66 I think they were. I guess I'll try the latest this weekend. I'm using MCE 2K5, though, so hopefully they won't present the same issues. I just read the new release notes and there seem to be very little in the way of improvements for non-SLI setups, so I may revert to what I've been using as they have been very stable and solid.

I'll try em, though!
I am having these 71.** issues with MCE 2005. I should have put that in the opening message of the thread, but I just assumed everyone is running 2005. Stupid me.

It locks after sitting for a period of time with no interaction. Not during playback of any kind, etc. It's odd. Additionally the 7*.** series drivers are running the cards hotter, about 10 degrees centigrade higher at idle, it's a known issue with them.

I am guessing I will try the 71.90s... if the same problem exists, I will have to roll back to the base purevideo nVidia drivers....
What display are you using? I was using the pre 7x drivers fine too but I had to run them 720p as 1080i was not working. Just curious if you or anyone has 1080i working with those older drivers.

Thanks!
Yeah, I did some reading on them. guru3d.com has a pretty good breakdown of the drivers, weaknesses and strengths. While they are definately a bit faster, there seems to be a problem with the running temps. However, that being said, no one has confirmed whether or not that is a bug, or legitmately increasing the temps.
New release drivers are out. Anyone having this problem want to test them out for us before I tear down my HTPC again? :)
