Can someone explain the difference between 720P and 1080i, as how these relate to the current HDTV set hardware. Aren't HDTV sets normally supporting 480i, 480P and 1080i? Does anyone broadcast a 720P signal, and if so, do you need hardware that decodes 720P?

Not many sets display true 720p (1280X720). Normally that progressive scan format (60 frames/sec) is sideconverted to 1080i (1080X1920), which is 30 frames/sec. You can check this Twice site for sets; your tuner/decoder, needed with HDTV-capable sets, must have 720p capability. Owners of such systems said in a recent thread they found true 720p to be superior to sideconverted 720p. ABC broadcasts some of its primetime fare in 720p. BTW, those scan format specs above aren't what you'll see. Actual horizontal resolution (larger number), if a set is capable, is typically ~7-17% less after filtering. Vertical resolution may be 30-50 percent less. -- John
