I hear of some people saying that on their 720P display or projector that they get better results setting their player to output 1080i as opposed to 720p. I wanted to see who does what and if you've done both please post your experience.

I am running 1080i right now and sometime go back to 720P. In my case I don't see much difference, but I've heard other can see a lot of difference with the setting at one or the other.

For the first year I had my HD-A1 set to 1080i - there were early issues with 720p output that were resolved with later FW releases.

After upgrading to FW 2.1, I switched to 720p and the picture looks at least as good as 1080i so I'm staying at 720p for now.

This on a Panny AE-900.

For HDDVD disc, set it to 1080i.

For SD DVD disc, set it to 720P.

Above is my findings on A2 with Mit. HC3100.

Up until Children of Men, I would have voted 720, but that title (and supposedly some others) have some issues if the player's output is 720p. At 1080i it's fine. Since I don't see any difference between 720 and 1080 otherwise, I'm just leaving the HDA1 set for 1080i.

On my cable box to the 32" 1366x768 Aquos, I can't see a difference between 720p or 1080i at any distance, so it is set at 1080i, just because "more is better" here in America.

If I connect the HD-A2 to it for firmware updates or viewing HD DVD movies in the family room, it is set at "up to 1080i".

It's nothing like the obvious change I see on my PC, changing resolution settings from 600x800 or 1024x768, etc...for gaming.

I have mine set to 1080p. I have a Panasonic AX100 and 1080p looks a bit sharper than 720 to me.

I'm going to post this in the "HD-XA2 prices going down" thread about this. I just got my new XA2 ... and it won't output 1080i over HDMI ... or at least I can't figure out how to make it do so. There is no "Resolution" buttom on the remote like there was on the HD-A1. In setup, I set it to output "Up to 1080i". But it keeps on giving me 720p. Is it autosensing my IN76's native rez and doing this automatically?

I posted this here because I'd like to output at 1080i. My projector does a great job of scaling.

Can't figure out how to do it.

This puppy may be going back.

I have an HTPC, and I've tried both 1080i and 720p. I can hardly tell a difference, but am outputting 720p because my TV doesn't seem to overscan at this resolution.

My TV is a 46" 720p Samsung DLP.

For some reason several different sources, not just HD DVD players, seem to look better on my JVC 720p HD-ILA RPTV at 1080i than they do at 720p.

....

Yes, it's autosensing and acting accordingly.

But why not simply accept this? The HQV proceassing and scaling does a great job.

I doubt the infocus scaler betters it.
