I recently purchased this model and have a question about the HD signals it accepts. The spec sheet says it accepts 1080i and 480p signals.

What happens when a 720p signal is sent to the TV? Will it display the picture just as it would 1080i or would you get no picture at all?

Some of my favorite channels broadcast in 720p like ESPN and FOX so I doubt I will ever go high def if I can't get these channels.

When I bought the TV the display model was showing baseball in HD on Fox. Not sure if it was 720p or they were converting it to 1080i somehow...

If you feed it a 720p signal all you'll get is a black screen. However virtually all HD Set Top Boxes can be set to convert it to 1080i (or 480p) so you can see the channels broadcast in 720p. That's how you were able to see FOX on the display model. I have a Panny tube TV and when i set my STB to output 720p ABCHD, FOXHD, and ESPNHD go black so i have to keep 720p de-selected.

TVs only need 720p for certain XBOX games, otherwise it's not needed since the STBs can convert it to something the TV will accept.

The consumer Panasonic TH-37PD25U/P and TH-42PD25U/P models will accept a 720p signal via the internal ATSC HD tuner or via the Cablecard slot. Otherwise you will need to set your STB to output either 1080i or 480p if you are using the other inputs as Randy described.

aaron: Not to worry. I have the ED Panasonic and you will be able to view 720P and 1080I and not know the difference. And, at 12 feet, the HD content (to my eyes) will look as good as HD over an HD display. SEE..for yourself.

I was under the impression it only accepted 1080i and 480p.

I hooked up a powered OTA antenna and get the HD local channels thru the built in Tuner, watched the Astros game lastnight, so whatever type of signal it was broadcast in the PD picked it up. Picture is great signals are still a little weak at 30-50% on the signal meter, may try a different antenna. May keep doing this till D* HD Tivo is cheaper.

Hey qkslvr I'm in the Woodlands too with same TV !

jamesrc is correct.

You can receive 720p via ATSC Tuner, CableCARD and also the front RGB input.

Otherwise, just set your Set Top Box (Cable Box) to 1080i and you will be able to view the 720p material.

You will not be able to tell a difference in the fact that the 720p is be sent to your plasma as 1080i.

Nothing to worry about.

I have the 50PX25 and can personally verify, beyond any doubt, that the internal tuner accepts 720p. I watch it all the time.

The 720p limitation is from all other inputs except the front PC input.

Magnopony - will you STOP IT already with the "my ED looks just as good as HD" stuff...you're going to provoke yet another squabble.

The lack of 720p is just for the component and DVI ports. That only affects watching an XBOX video game in 720p mode, for that use 480p. For an external HD tuner (satellite or cable) just setup the STB for 1080i output, it will ocnvert all the 720p HD channels to 1080i and they still look great!
