Your Pio is a bastard resolution which means its internal scaler is operating regardless of what you feed it so your best option is to allow your STB to as little as possible and leave the scaling to the TV. That means 1080i for all HD channels except ABC, FOX, ESPN and Nat Geo which are 720p. You will probably find that 1080i provides the best compromise overall.

Read the link in my sig for more info on scaling.

I've found that the image on both my 768p Plasma and LCD TV as well as my 1080p Plasma looks crisper and more detailed when i set my DVRs to output everything at 1080i (including the SD and 720p channels). Setting them to output everything at 720p makes the image noticeably softer and less detailed. I much prefer the 1080i setting but my GF likes the softer 720p setting so if one does see a perceivable difference, he might prefer one over the other.

So yeah, try both and see if you see the difference that we see.

I too just recently purchased a 5080 and a prefer 1080i for the same reason Randy prefers 1080i, the picture just looks a bit more crisp.
