When using WinDVD or PowerDVD, it will report a 16:9 DVD in a 720x480 aspect ratiom but 720:480=1.5 : 1, on the other hand, AE100's resolution

is 852x480 which is 1.85 :1= 16:9. SO I just wonder why the PowerDVD will report the NTSC DVD signal is 720x480 but not 852x480??

The "Pixels" in NTSC DVD is not symmetrical. They are instead rectangular and will be stretched and scaled to fit the AE100 LCD panel.

This may not be what you are asking but the AE100's native resolution is actually 856x480, so in powerstrip you would want to select "any" for the aspect ratio.

I think I see where you are going.... All DVDs are actually 4:3 even the widescreen ones but with black bars at the top and bottom (letterboxing). Anamorphic DVDs will actually take up the entire vertical resolution but when they are squeezed to varying degrees the result is the widescreen image.


PowerDVD is reporting the native resolution of the disc, your HTPC or scaler is the one working to make it 852/856x480.


BTW you may want to search through the HTPC forum because I still feel like I am not answering your question.

But 720x480 is not 4:3 (640x480 is 4:3)

640x480 (4:3) = 1.33:1

720x480=1.5:1

856x480=16:9=1.85:1


why 720x480 exist ?? why so many people said the resolution of 16:9 DVD is 720x480??

The native resolution of DVD is definitely 720x480 though.

Long story short resolution and aspect ratio are not necessarily tied together.

The reason you want to scale the native 720*480 resolution is to bypass the internal scaler in the PJ.


The DVD is 720*480 always, the computer makes 868*480 or whatever depending on the PJ. The result , you bypass the internal, often bad scaler.
