7800gt to 7900 GT, EVGA Stepup, worth it?

843 Views 7 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  MAX_POWER_HDryer
I still have a bit under 2 weeks to take advantage of the Evga stepup prgram, basically you send in your vid card to evga with reciept from purchase and you can upgrade your card for the price difference.

they way it stands now I could upgrade my 7800gt to a 7900gt for $80, but I could prolly end up upgrading for about the same price if I were to ebay my old card and buy a new one.

Anyway I am wondering if the upgrade it worth it for $80, especially since I am planning to sit tight and not do any major upgrades until I know what Vista is going to need and then look at hdmi/dx10 video cards. Would I probly be okay sitting on the 7800gt until then?

What are your thoughts on this?

my basic specs:

run on 27" lcd so max rez 1024X720

asus a8n-sli

amd 64 3200+ venice core

2 gb value ram

7800gt 256mb

Have you seen any benchmark comparisions at places like anandtech.com yet? That would probably yield you the most meaningful answers right away.
I personally moved from 2 EVGA 7800 GTs to two EVGA 7900 GTs, but I probably wouldn't do it if I had the chance to go back. The difference between the two isn't too dramatic. A single 7900 GT usually provides the gain of being able to increase the resolution a little or apply the next step of AA and AF, while yielding similar frames per second as a 7800 GT. If I was you and money is tight, I would wait for the next wave of cards that support Direct X 10.

Thank you for the input, that is pretty much the direction I was leading, but you know most of us PC gmaers, always looking for the next upgrade :)

Looks like I will sit tight for now, it's not like im having troubles running anything right now.
I had a 7900 gt from evga, and moved to the 7900 gt superclocked and while the difference isnt extreme, i got my 3dmark05 score from 7500 to 9500 without overclocking
Since you're running at a pretty low rez, I wouldn't bother upgrading right now to be honest.

Was that supposed to be 7800 to 7900?
I think the benchmarks won't show the major advantage this has over the 7800gt. The overclocking ability of the 7900gt is massive. It also uses much less power and in turn puts off less heat. This was because of the shrinking of the die size. With a volt mod and paired with a vf900 you can pull of clockspeeds faster than the 7900gtx. The anandtech forum has a step by step guide on how to do the volt mod and where to find a vf900 for cheap.
