Hello new to this forum and considering my first large 50 inch display. I first just want to know if you have a 1080P display and play 780P source material if it's true that it will not completely fill up your screen. Trying to decide on a 720 or 1080p LCD. I'm assuming this might be true because 720P is 1280 x 720 opposed to 1920 x 1080p and it's my understanding that broadcast are basically limited to 720p. I've also heard that at this size it's difficult to see the difference between the two resolutions. Thanks for your help!

It'll fill up the entire screen if it's supposed to. It all depends on the aspect ratio, not the television resolution...

All broadcast TV that i know of that is 720p (ABC, ESPN, FOX, etc...) fills up the entire screen. YOu shouldn't worry at all about that.

I'd say, if you can afford it, go for the 1080p TV....might as well get as much bang for your buck... and most of the time 1080p TVs are just better than 720p tvs...so it's a better decision to get a 1080p TV

I'd vote for 1080p as well. If you ever decide to get into gaming on a current gen console, some games don't support 720p and you're stuck playing them in 480p at best. You also get a full 1080p image off a Blu Ray disc without having to downconvert it to 720p, so you're taking a step out of that. And TVs ain't cheap. Think of it as a long term purchase. In a few years are you going to be happy you got a 720p set? Or are you going to wonder what might have been?

Hmm now I didn't know that about the games I do intend on getting a Nintendo Wii anyone know if that supports 1080p. Also another good point about down converting just ordered a Samsung BD P1500 Bluray and my new 37 inch LCD is only 720p so I guess it will have to down convert the image how will this affect the picture? Thanks boy this is a great site, learned a lot already!!

Wii maxes out at 480P, only if you buy special component cables. Otherwise, it's 480i.

jmystikcfl has his facts a bit wrong. When the PS3 first came out, it didn't have a very good 'converter' of sorts for it's games...and some were left high and dry if their TVs could only show 1080i or 480p (very old school HDTV CRT tvs...). That problem is fixed and it has never been a problem on the XBOX 360... no need to even worry about that...

The Wii won't look nearly (or even close) to as good as a PS3 or XBOX360...but I'm going to assume that if you didn't know that already you probably won't care all that much in the long run. But BCScott is right, if you get a Wii, get the component cables for it as well (the blue, green, and red video cables), not just the composite cable (yellow video cable) that comes with the system.

And don't worry, it will take up the full screen...just make sure to go through the settings once you have the component cables and make the appropriate changes... (to 480p and widescreen). It'll help make the games look as best as they can...

How will going from 1080p to 720p effect the picture. My 37 inch I have in the bedroom is only 720 so my new Samsung Bluray will have to convert it down to 720p and I'm now wondering how this will effect the picture.

- There isn't a fix for 720p only games on the PS3. There are still threads that pop up on the PS3 forum complaining about this fact. Fortunately, virtually every TV today supports 720p and 1080p.

- Unless your player has an extremely poor scaler, the picture should look great.

After doing more research, yes...the issue hasn't been fixed... but it only applies to you if you have a tv that can ONLY do 1080i and 480p... other than that it's fine...

Still, what the other guy said was still mistaken...
