I am really considering getting a proficient 7.1 setup for my HT. Problem is that they only make 5 1/4" and 6 1/2" in wall speakers. I am most definately runing in walls, but my question is, should I do 6.5" or 8" in walls?

They will be ran by the new pioneer elite sc27 receiver in a room that is 15 x 13. The reciever will be putting 140 watts to each speaker, so will a 6.5" speaker be enough for that room size?

I am looking at either the iw650 or the iw625's.

thanks

Well, I doubt you will get 140 watts to each speaker, someone will correct me if I am wrong. Probably more like 50 watts a speaker if you are lucky.

Myself, having in wall and ceiling speakers throughout my house, I would skip the 7.1 and go with a nice 5.1 with real speakers for the L/R/C and some bi/di-pole surrounds mounted on the wall along with a real sub.

Do you have a picture of the room you want to do this in? If you do, please post, or give us a diagram at least.

Well I am going with inwalls, no question about that, and it will be 7.1. Proficient is a very good speaker brand, especially for inwalls and I know they will sound very very good. I really doubt that pioneer overrated their receivers power output by 180%. Unless the 140w x 7 is max and not rms power.

But anyways, I'm going 7.1 and inwall so will the top if the line proficients be good, or should I find 8" drivers?

Well, if you are set on inwalls, I would go with the 6.5 and really watch how you set the walls up. I don't know the speakers you are speaking of, do they come with in wall enclosures or baffling? Because to get the best sound, you are going to have to essentially make your walls speaker cabinets.

The SC027 is not only a THX2 Ultra certified AVR, but its also got an ICEPower amp in it, i would not be at all suprised to see it deliver 140w x 7 with all channels driven.

Usually those overblown power ratings are in the low end $200-300 receivers, especially sony's, which say they do 100w x 7, etc.

They do not come with a box/encasing, they use the wall cavity.

If a certain amount of R&D is performed on in wall speakers, they do have the capability of great sound quality WITHOUT the use of a self encased box, such that triads use. I'm not saying they are better, but some in wall speakers DO have the potential to give great sq with the use of a wall cavity as its box. these arent $50/pair speakers, they are $600/pair.

Price is not indicative to a good sounding speaker, afterall BOSE cost about 2k

not always, but bose is also a big name company. The previous poster prooved what I'm about to say in that proficient is a "no-name" brand so to speak, in that any average person hasn't heard of them. They can price their stuff higher for a reason....because it is quality. Bose does it because at best buy or any other given consumer electronics store, they are the better speaker that you can buy, therefore, top of the line in the average consumers eyes which means they will pay alot for it, even though me and you both know that bose is just average compared to say triad, or proficient, or speakercraft, or paradigm....

Not really true... BB also sells (or at least sold) a line of Klipsch that sounded better than the $2k Bose and cost ~$700...
