Western Digital 80GB 8MB HD $20 after $60MIR (Starts 1/25)

Starting tomorrow OfficeMax (in store only) will have the Western Digital 80GB 8MB HD for $20 after two $30 rebates. Thanks Drexqd.

It is very likely that the HD will be out of stock in the first 5 minutes the store opens. Some stores are already out of stock because people are buying it early, returning and re-buying tomorrow.

Damn, closest one to me is 60 miles away. Who would have thought they don't have a single location in the dc metro area. :(
i'll tell you this one is pretty well documented..theres people already buying them a day early so they can return them and rebuy them at the sale price..i may try to get a few myself..good luck

Got two yesterday at 11am.

...And I thought I was the only one who did the buy early/ return/ re-buy trick :D.
My wife is thankful that there's no deals coming up for 250GB disks, cuz as soon as they come in
don't worry if you miss out on this one....HDD deals are constant.

best strategy is to buy early then return and get the new price with the appropriate date.

mm
IVB, there are 50cent 250GB disks.

Circuit City has one for 144.99 or 149.99 after rebate. You can save 30 off that price by pricematching to fry's pre-rebate price.
I went hog wild when I was getting the 250GB drives for $110 each and picked up 16 of them. When I can get another killer deal, I will pick up 32 more drives. I have two more cases on the way already and my current server is close to full.

Unfortunately, 80GB drives are not large enough for really large arrays and the cost of extra drives starts adding up on bigger cases, more drive cages and controllers with more ports. Still, they are great for other uses.
Your 3.5TB server is full, and you're thinking about building another 8TB one?

How many DVDs do you own? I don't think the Library of Congress uses that much space...
that is insane!!! i went to the office max near me and picked up my rain check..i'll wait til next week and then just buy it for $20 no rebates involved!!

My server is close to full. I am thinking of building another one when the current server is totally full and then another when that one fills up. I have two identical cases en route to me right now. I would have used the 80GB drives, but it just isn't cost effective on those once I figure in the cost of the RAID controllers, case and the rest of the computer and then look at the cost per GB.

They are certainly worth it on a straight $/GB basis, but think of how good a deal it would be to buy 6GB drives for $0.25 a piece. Your coust per GB is about $0.04, but they are not big enough to really fit the bill for the kind of volume I any of us would need. The 80GB drives are great for my office, but not all that for my media server.

I don't look at a 16x250GB drive server as 4TB, as you lose 500GB to parity, so your effective storage is only 3.5TB. I would look at building 2 more 3.5TB servers, or larger if I can get a better deal on 300 or 320GB drives. I own about 260 titles right now, but I will be getting another 80 or so DVD's in the next month when I finish my collection of titles that are programmed for my Odyssee motion simulator. I want to keep all of those on the server and automate it for point and click start-up of any title that has been programmed.

I also need space for HDTV files, as well as my music collection and have a little left over for off-site backups of our servers at my office and for a digital security recorder for my home security system.

Could you elaborate on that a bit? Since the rebates expire before you get your unit they will sell you the drive for the straight $20?

If that's true, I'd rather have the raincheck too!

just a little word of advice. office max is closing thier last store in tulsa. no rainchecks =(. office max closed thier other store in town i think 2 years ago.. one good thing those close outs rock.. got 10 jabra headsets for 2 bucks a peice.. sad thing is they rocked on prices. such as my 40 buck leather managers chair for the home office. =(
Dont' count on getting the net price using a raincheck. The Officemax I went to would not issue a raincheck since they said that since they do not know when they will be stocking again and the rebate is time limited. Good luck.

I thought the store will only allow you 1 rebate per household. I talk to ComoUSA before and the sales rep told me that meant I could by 1 drive at the rebated price.
One per address. 16 addresses later and rebates are pouring in. I don't have that many friends, but when I add in relatives, I am good to go.
myproblem is I have to trust that many people to actually give me the money after they cash the check.

i simply called around various stores in my area til i got a manager that said he would issue me a raincheck...it took a while.then i went to store and got the raincheck from him...and yes he confirmed that if they don't get them in until after the sale(rebate period), then they must honor the rebate and sale it at straight pricing!!!

the point i made to him was that when you get them in,i'll be at work or something and then in 5 minutes they will be sold out...and he agreed this was a likely outcome!!so he issued me a raincheck.

of course i will believe this when i see it,but i will let you know next week how this turns out!!

So...... even though several of us HAVE rainchecks.... has anyone been notified the drive is in, or actually paid the $19.95 at the cash register?

I'm still holding mine -- although it may be wishful thinking
I was told my raincheck will not likely be fullfilled for a long time to the number of orders and discontinuation of the product. I am still holding onto it though. ;) I was also told by the cashier they will adjust the price down to post-rebate cost. Hold onto your rebate forms, as they will not have them in their back pockets when you go to pick them up.
