9800 Problem - Did I Screw the Pooch?

290 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Axel
Howdy and HELP!

Built new HTPC (pre 6800 Hub Bub) a couple months ago

Put in 9800Pro (AIW) (I know, didnt need the wonder part)

Built HTPC put Zalman Heat sink on 9800 (fan wouldnt fit in HT-400 Case)) .. All Is Good

Worried about not having a fan on the 9800 vidcard per threads

Got VGA Silencer and Installed ......... All IS NOT GOOD!

Now I just get moving pixelation all over the screen, sometimes can barely read it, right after silencer install got a VPU recovery message once that I saw, but usually unreadable ..... during boot letters in posts look like a "broken up forgein language" ..........

Tried 9800 in another machine . same thing

So now I'm back to an old 64MB matrox! And not a happy camper ! (With TT2 just out!)

So did I screw the pooch, Did I dust the card somehow .......

OR DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS?

More info than yuo need to know .........

I'm having my knee replaced tomorrow and after that will be hard to work on the HTPC and change cables etc for a while, no time to get another card before and just want to be able to get the system up and running before tomorrow, so I can tweak and watch during recovery

Noone I know living close enough to me knows squat about computers, especially HTPCS to help me change things around after today!

OR AM I JUST SCREWED FOR NOW ?

Thanks for any input, GOOD or BAD!

I tried a VGA Silencer and never could get good solid contact on my ram sinks. Try the original fan that came on the card if you have it. Sounds like its overheating to me.

Thanks Dog!

Since it's happening from Boot (totally cold, off for hrs!), have I probably already fried the card? I'll get the heatpipes or orig fan back on per your post ......... but (to me, and I dont know much) It;s acting up while "not hot", so too late? Fried?

Thanks Again

Jeff;

Since you already tried the 9800 in another machine, this will probably not help you. But here it goes just in case: I once had issues with a 9700 (up-fitted with a Zalman ZM80-HP). A couple of minutes after boot I got artifacts, so I assumed overheating/improper cooling and added another fan to cool the heat sink. However, this did not really help. By accident I eventually found out that those artifacts were actually caused by a grounding problem, resulting from the steel bracket which held the CPU fan. When the air heated up in the case the position of the bracket changed slightly and then touched the video card to cause that grounding problem. After I put in a piece of antistatic foil as insulation all was well.

Also, I once had another issue where case/mobo/AGP slots did not align very well. Result was that I had to bend the card a bit to be able to fit the screw in that held the card. This then created tension in the card and also caused artifacts.

Again, this will probably not apply to your issue, since you already tried the card in another PC and therefore had with a different mounting set-up. But you never know… Good luck!
