A-20 Trouble w HP3 (Azkaban) HD-DVD US

1084 Views 12 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  ilovenola2
I got the first four Potter films in the BOGO-Amazon after-Christmas sale. Three titles look and work fine but the other-- HP3, "Prisoner of Azkaban," has been problematical in playback on my A-20.

This disc starts with the usual warning and then, with sound, the Warner Bros video logo. Then "System Error" displays.

I returned the first copy to Amazon who graciously dispatched another swiftly. The second arrived yesterday. I popped it in my A-20 and exactly the same thing happened!

I've had the same issue with only one other HD-DVD title-- "Alexander Revisited." Disc two was always fine. Disc one played perfectly two or three times and then the exact same thing described above happened. I took this disc to a friend's and played it on his A-20. It still played the opening, then "System Error."

I visited out-of-town friends who have an A-2. I took it to them and it played perfectly (this is the Alexander disc one, now). Since it was long after I bought it that the trouble developed, I've subsequently sent it to them so they can enjoy the fabulous pq and spectacular stagings, if not the overblown film itself.

Sorry to be long-winded. I should simply have asked in the beginning:

"Is anyone else having the same problem with the US-HD-DVD release of 'Prisoner of Azkaban' in an A-20 machine?"

I'm just not sure whether to call Amazon and request yet another copy or just to ask them to accept a return and work out a deal on the BOGO.

Thanks for any input you may offer.

what firmware version are you running?

Hi, Rockytt,

I'm running the current 2.7 firmware. When I first had the "Alexander Disc One" I had never updated-- it was one of the first discs I got. It had stopped working before I updated to 2.5.

I had hoped that update would correct the problem-- but it didn't; nor did the current 2.7.

It's interesting that the "Alexander Disc One" (never a problem with Disc Two) worked fine for over a month before it stopped. I probably looked at sequences of it four or five times. Then it just settled into: "Copy Warn," "WB Logo," "System Error display."

And that's it.

Now, the Potter 3 Azkaban discs, both of them, repeat the same pattern. Neither of those discs ever went beyond that in playback. I'm waiting to return the second disc until I see what input I get on AVS from you guys. And, thanks!!

Thanks, JetJockey1. I'm not surprised that HO3 played on your A-2 2.7FW. When I took the Alexander Disc One that would not play on two A-20s to my friend for A-2 playback, it did so perfectly.

Something tells me that some discs are just NOT going to play on some machines!
Just to eliminate this as being the problem, try thourghly cleaning the disc before playing it. I have had many problems that were eliminated by first cleaning the discs.

It sounds like you may have a more serious problem but I would at least eliminate this as a possibility first.

Thanks, TomsHT, but we're talking about two different discs, same title and issue, having the same glitch in the same spot on two different A-20 machines.

The A-20 (our two anyway) simply seems not to like Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. (They didn't like Alexander Disc One either, but that may be the fault of Oliver Stone!)

I understand and as I said I do think you may have problems besides the disc itself but again I would at least start with eliminating this as a possibility since its easy enough to try.

I own 150-200 HD DVD titles which are still mainly played on my first gen HD-A1 player. And I know with this player, many of the discs would have problems (freeze up, stutter etc) unless I first sprayed a disc cleaner on it and wiped it off
Thanks, Tom. I tried cleaning but it didn't work.

I note that there is now a 2.8 firmware update. I'm going to try to download it and burn it to a disc and then try the HP3 disc again. If that doesn't work, I'll just have to return it for exchange to Amazon and hope that a third copy works.

Otherwise.... well, who knows!

Thanka again for your help. Joe
Good luck, let us know if it works or not...

Well, Tom & Co., it seems the 2.8 firmware update to my A-20 did the trick. Not only does the HP 3- Prisnoner of Azkaban HD-DVD US disc now play but an excellent picture seems to be even a bit better.

We'll be installing the update on my local friend's A-20 and testing the same disc again.

Wish I could check the Alexander Disc One but it's no longer in the area.

Looks like problem solved and many thanks to those of you who took the time to help. I really appreciate it. Joe

Hi Joe,

Great to hear the problem is resolved and amazing to hear that the firmware update actually improves picture quality

As you can tell, I'm disc cleaning happy and would still recommend you picking up some type of disc cleaning solution to clean discs before use. I use Plexus Spray (can be found on Amazon) but I'm sure there are other solutions also available. It really does prevent alot of problems, I notice it any time someone in the house skips actually cleaning a discs before putting them in the player.

Thanks, Tom. I'm going to take your advice.

Last night I had a Netflixed HD-DVD combo copy of "The Good Shepherd." I put it in without looking and it played the logo but then had an error. I took it out and saw it was pretty scuffy looking. I cleaned the disc, replaced it in the machine and it played the entire movie on the HD-DVD side without a glitch!!

I'll take the time for the quick cleaning from now on. Thanks!!

Joe
