So .... just purchased these 2 receivers to play around with,.

\

Marantz SR7005

vs

Yamaha RX-A2020

Since I don't feel like spending hours learning a unit I won't keep .... what are some basics and just how you would go about comparing these two? What setting and what procedure would you employ if you were comparing Receivers in your home?

any input is appreciated.

thanks

The most important part of testing 2 receivers is getting them to the exact same volume. If they aren’t level matched then you test will be pointless because the louder one will sound better. You will need a spl meter to level match. Run Audyssey and YPAO first and then level match. Also, if you can get someone else to switch them for you that would help. The test will be more accurate if you don’t know which one is playing.

Why not try two units that are significantly DIFFERENT. Try a "non" Japanese brand.

Why not a Cambridge Audio or Anthem, Rotel, Arcam, etc.

It's like comparing a bunch of American car brands, but refusing to try any Japanese, Korean or German. Just ignoring whole gigantic sections of the market place. With cars, few people ever go back.

The biggest difference is likely to be the room EQ and that can vary from room to room.  So the winner in your room might not be in another room.  How you set up the EQs can change the sound significantly.

So ........... sound update ....

Yesterday, changed music to play through all speakers with subwoofer instead of just 2ch stereo without sub.

Also ... changed Crossover from 60 to 90.

On receiver did a -1 on Treble

Result .... sound is great. I am getting delivery of Marantz 7005 and Yamaha rx-a2020 today. Don't even know if I should unpack them. Do you ever upgrade even when you are satisfied with the sound? :)

Still can't get the upgrade bug out of me.

Compared WAV vs FLAC vs 320Kbps MP3 vs 128Kbps MP3.

128 is out ..... 320 is perfect middle (easy to get, sounds close to FLAC)
