But does anyone know of compatibility issues with playing BD-50 DL RE discs? I may be getting a standalone purely for curiosity and to fill a space in an A/V rack and I'd like it to be able to play re-writeable Blu-rays.

I have a Sony S5000ES and I have a BD-RE 50GB and it worked just fine.


I bought a blu-ray that was region locked when I thought it was region free....so I made a back-up copy (just for myself) with the region coding removed. It was a dual-layer Blu-ray so I had to use a 50GB to make it work.


So in fact this performed two tests...the LG blu-ray writer worked with this disc, and my standalone Sony blu-ray player worked with this disc.

The Sony models currently have the best compatibility when it comes to BD-R and BD-RE playback.
