I've had my MX500 for over a year, but I've just now bought decent equipment for it to control so I just now have the need for discreet codes.

With all the talk of IRClone or JP1 with a Radio Shack remote, I'm a little confused about what my options are for getting discreet codes into my MX500.

Specifically, I'm looking for Power On and Power Off along with video inputps for my new Sony KD-30XS955.

Anyone give me the rundown and what steps to follow to make this happen?

They're called "discrete" codes. Basically, get a JP1 compatible remote, OneForAll or Radio Shack (typical recommendation is the OFA 8811), then go to http://www.hifi-remote.com for the instructions. You can get most discretes just by using the "advanced codes" & "discrete codes" instructions described there.

If the remote doesn't have the appropriate preprogrammed setup codes for your equipment, then you have to get into the JP1 stuff to hack one into the remote. I doubt you'd need it for a Sony TV.

Once you have the codes in the JP1 remote, then you just use it to teach the MX500.
