I just purchased this dvd from Target.

I am probably going to return it.

I noticed on the back that it said English mono and French mono.

After noticing that it didn't say 5.1 surround, I bought it anyway.

I have no idead why.

Buyers impulse I guess.

It was $9.44.

I assume this dvd it not worth having because of this, right?

www.dvdplanet.com website has the following about this dvd.

Audio:

ENGLISH: Dolby Digital Mono [CC]

FRENCH: Dolby Digital Mono

I could understand if this was an old movie.

Why didn't they make this dvd with 5.1 surround or at least Dolby 4.0?

Why would you return this very good, very funny movie?

The DVD picture is OAR (Original Aspect Ratio) 1.85:1 [Letterboxed Only]

And the audio is also OAR (Original Audio Recording) 2 channel mono.

This is how it was mixed for theaters! They did the audio right!!!

I'd be more worried about the film transfer [But at $9.44 you can't complain too much!] :)

An increadibly funny movie!

The sound is correct, and there is no reason to remix it - it's fine.

The only problem is that its non-anamorphic, but then it is an old dvd release of a back-catelogue title, right around the time when studios were trying to put selection on the shelves as fast as possible (one of the reasons DVD is so popular today.).

A very good movie, at a good price. Look, for all movies we want the best possible transfers, the best sound, etc. But for some movies, it doesn't make a huge difference if it's not anamorphic, nor if the sound isn't surround. For epics, large scale action movies, etc. we want the good stuff. But for the huge number of movies that are script-driven (dialogue and acting, what a concept!) and have small composed scenes, you're not missing much. I guess you have to know the movie a bit to decide if a given presentation will do justice. The current issue of Wanda is fine, but as usual, a better one is...better. There is also the issue of movies of all eras being processed to appeal to the current trend, rather than being left as originally presented. I just don't see how those who want OAR, to preserve the director's visual aspect, to be "pure", also don't want original sound presentation to preserve the sound aspect.

Yes. Definitely return it. Don't buy/rent any DVD if it isn't 5.1, even if it was never recorded that way. Return it. $9.94 is way too much to spend on a DVD, even if it is a very witty and hilarious movie. By all means return it. You can use that $9.94 to donate to your favorite charity. Please start a new thread when you return it and tell us who the return went.

There's a SE of this movie coming out next year? Great! I own the current version and think it's not bad at all, for a non-anamorphic disc. But, I may consider getting the SE if it's a marked improvement in PQ.

I thought the soundtrack was fine - certainly not an in-your-face surround mix, but then again I don't think this movie called for that kind of soundtrack either.

Just my $0.02.

Huh?

Just to make sure that I'm not being a dumb female (brunette), this movie will only have sound coming from my front speakers right?

Basically, I won't hear any sound from my rear speakers, right?

If this is the case, I'll just wait for the SE.

Does anyone have this movie and played it in a dedicated 5.1 or 7.1 home theater?

If so, what's your take?

Thanks!

Doc, just go watch the movie! The Special Edition might say 5.1 sound on the label? But it won't be funnier or sound much different, I'd hope? This is one of the funniest films ever IMO. Find out why! Best wishes!

I just bought this at Target. Says DD. is my first DVD ever that's not in 5.1. Rotten, rotten *******s. I'm guessing that SE is not out yet. Someone update this thread if you find it.

Still a great movie, and I understand the source was 2 channel as well.

One of my favorite comedies of all time. I can't wait for MGM to release this in Region 1. Any ideas when this SE will be released?

Woot! :D I'll be replacing my original dvd for the SE just for the second disc features, regardless of 5.1 or better transfer.

You have got to be kidding! I guess this means you can't watch almost all movies made before 1953 and a great many made after 1953.

Where the hell is your sense of proportion the movie is a comedy, just what great enhancement would Dolby 5-1 add?

Get off your high horse and watch the movie and laugh your ass off!
