A friend with a A20 Problem

I told someone in my other movie forum how great HD DVD was, he took the plunge on a A20 and is having problems beyond my limited expertise, and with a model I don't own. Can you help him out? Here is his dilemma,

Well I made the leap - and here's what I got:

A Toshiba HD- A20 with a HDMI cable with DVI adapter (Monster)

Hooked it up to my Studio Experience (Sanyo) projector (1366 res) and -

AMAZING PICTURE! BUT...

It won't hold the signal thru the DVi connection! After 2 or 3 minutes it loses it - if you restart the player or reload the disc it comes back, but always drops again. Seemed to be upconverting regular discs, but can't be sure.

The picture still is great on component inputs, but compared to the brief glimpses of digital suffers by compare. Tried both 720 and 1080i, no difference.

Might be the cable and adaptor? I'm returning it today and will try a different one, but it the problem's with my PJ I'll be returning the player - not worth it if I can't use the DVI in.

Any comments/help?

HDMI->DVI just doesn't work very well with the Toshibas. He could try updating the firmware (see other threads in this forum).

But it may not work. I use component for my connection to my DVI capable projector. I think the picture looks better, anyway.

FWIW -- My A1 (latest FW revision) is totally unable to directly drive either my DVI-D input TV or my DVI-D interfaced projector. However, with an HDMI splitter between them it's perfect. With an HDMI receiver between them, same thing.

PS. An HDMI switch should do the job too -- that could be useful to him if he is anticipating more than one HDMI source..
