a good QUALITY camcorder???

380 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  spyker1212
I want to buy my wife a camcorder for Christmas. I want to start doing my homework now. And I know nothing about them.
Something to take on vacation...family events...when we travel to national parks and such, etc

I don't want one thats almost outdated.
I want a HiDef or 4K ....or whatever the better resolution would be

Even if its ....$1000 or more. I think $1500 would be my limit

Is there a good website, like a buyers guide? I tried finding them but it appears to just be websites listing camcorders linked to Amazon (where they get a commission if you order)

Thank you!!

Is there a specific preference or user requirement for a camcorder? I am asking because these days all manufacturers don't appear to bother making small, compact consumer camcorders with cutting edge features like they did a while back anymore so you would be better off buying for your wife a small, and compact hybrid point and shoot camera that also shoots good video instead.

At the top in terms of both video image quality and price is the Sony RX100 VII (or version 7). If that is too much the Sony HX99 works extremely well in both still pictures and video also up to 4K and costs less than half of the RX100. Both cameras are truly pocketable, weigh about the same and have about the same size and appearance. I use the cheaper one for my casual video shoots and on vacation and can assure you the video quality and features are more than enough for most casual use.

I am not a Sony fanboy but as I have used mostly Sony cameras for my casual video taking over the years I am more familiar with them than other makes from other brands.

Don't. Just don't. If she likes shooting video she'll get one she wants. If she does not like it, the camcorder will be collecting dust. If you still want to do it, choose according to your own taste, because it will be you who will be using it.

What next?

Agree with Ungermann. Your wife must want to film and, if so, she may have an idea of what she wants.

What does she intend to do with the results? Plug into the telly and watch a mixture of good and bad footage plus all the various noises the camera picks up?
She will need a decent video editor to create a usable video from the mishmash of shots plus add music or a voiceover to the final film.

If it is still your choice, choose a camcorder from the "trinity" (Canon, Panasonic or Sony), IMO HD is easier to edit than 4K and does not need a powerful computer while still giving excellent pictures. Look at the higher end of the consumer cams and select from the ones you fancy. My own choice would be between Canon and Panasonic as I have had bad experiences with Sony and my current camera is a Panasonic HC-V800 HD cam.

for video buy video camera(sony ax53) for photo buy a camera (rx100)

the advantage of sony ax53 is it has BOSS (stabilization). the disadvantage is it is not pocketable.

I still use my sony gwp77 to video my kid. but connect to external power cause battery drains fast. so far waiting for sony gw77 upgrade but no luck.
