guys,

i work in the software and accessories division of Dell. We were selling these online only at the listed price at negative $600 margin, due to a marketing error. I am sorry to report that we are no longer honoring this price.

This can be interpreted one of two ways:

1. in using the word "honoring" one can infer it to mean _all_ orders past and present.

or

2. any future orders at the previous price.

I am tempted to believe number 2 because of people reporting receiving their projectors. I am also tempted to believe that if this indeed was a representative of Dell it would be darn irresponsible to make such a statement if it implies number 1 considering the history of all this. Actually, I am tempted to believe that this is most likely the work of some prankster given the briefness of the message and its placement in that thread.

HUH? Say What?!

Does this mean that from this day forward they will no longer sell them at that price (we already knew this)

or

that all those people who were given order numbers the last 4 days or so, that their sales will no longer be honoured?

i realize some have started to recieve them, but i was towards the end of the food chain, WTF?

should i be worried here, or just seriously P.O.d?

BTW: i didn't order online, but over the phone, after it was taken offline, but the price was still verified then by my sales rep ( and it seems, continued to be verified by other sales reps days afterward). would this change the equation at all?

My order status is still the same, but I am betting it gets cancelled soon. If Dell doesn't honor the orders they have taken, they will have a serious black eye over this fiasco.

That post would have better been deleted by a moderator than reposted to a new thread.

Nothing in it matches to what Dell representatives have told those who ordered, and those who received the order.

The price has changed, original confirmed orders are being delivered at the original price, those are facts. That letter like other statements regarding no warranty, the deal validity have been hastily posted.

Alan, did you confirm this was a letter from Dell before posting? There has been enough misinformation on this subject, I'd rather see posts from AVScience about screen and bulb prices than a repost of a questionable letter.

Comments?

I've been peddling for 25 years. It's always so simple. I

offer an item for sale. The item has a selling price. A buyer decides to buy it. He/she gives me payment. I give her/him the item. End of story.

Will someone please tell me why the simple act of buying a video projector has degenerated into all the nonsense I've read on this forum for the past week?

Just a minute. First, I spoke with my Dell small business rep late this afternoon. She told me that my projector mount and spare bulb was on the way and that my projector will ship on 8/2/01. She went on to tell me that I was one of the last ones to get this great deal. I have spoken with her 2 other times since I ordered the projector and she could not be nicer ever time. My company has bought computer products from several different vendors over the years and I can tell you we have had service issues with all of them. Our experience with dell has been far and away the best period. I will not buy anything with Toshiba's name on it because of nonexistent service. I have no doubt Dell will deliver.

All companies make mistakes and big companies can make big mistakes. This price became available on Thursday and came to and end on Tuesday. That was 6 days. If the price had become available on Monday do you think it would have been available until Saturday? I think not. I would expect the price to have ended by Wednesday, at the latest.

Now on to the confusion on delivery dates. How many LT150's do you think Dell has in their warehouse or the distributors warehouse? 50, 100, 200, 500? With quick turn inventory models I would bet they both had no more than 1 to 2 weeks worth of inventory based on their sales models. This is how business works. So on Thursday this great deal comes up so a few are ordered on Thursday, more on Friday, some over the weekend, and on Monday they get hammered. I expect this is why the sale ended. On Friday you can bet they don't have a full staff ant the shipping department becomes overrun and stays overrun until late monday. Which is when the real shipping dates began to come out. I also suspect those of us with the later ship dates will get newer (maybe current)production models.

Look, if you want to ***** out Dell call them and cancel the order and quit complaining. I suspect they will breath a sigh of relief. If you don't cancel be patient and you will get a projector for $600 below wholesale. I bet those who bought a LT150 in May would gladly wait 3 weeks for one at a sub $2000 price.

I have been reading this forum for over a year and joined just recently. I attended the dinner at CES and have been on a projector search for about 1 year. I believe Alan deserves a ton of credit for all he has done and the patience he has shown over something that will initially make him little or no money.

Thanks Alan.

I do not work for Dell, own Dell stock, or have any vested interest other than getting a great deal on a projector.

I certainly think that the situation has become more complicated by the (mis)information on the Web. I placed an order with Dell, and was given a confirmation number. I have no reason (from Dell, at least) to think that they won't perform their obligation. If the situation arises and they do not, then I'm prepared to insist that they fulfill the order. Until that time, however, I am eagerly awaiting some high quality movies on my LT150!!

I aint cancellin nuthing, pal.

If you read those couple of sentences at the beginning of this thread and you have it all figured out then you must be psychic.

"We were selling these online only at the listed price".

What does "online only" mean? Does that mean telephone orders don't count. Does "online" mean telephone orders too. Does he even know what he means? By the way who is he?

Does he have a name?

"I'm sorry to say that we are no longer honoring the price".

To whom? Those who've already ordered? Those who try to order now?

That's a poor excuse for communication. And if you have it all figured out from that then you're a whole lot smarter than the rest of us. Congratulations.

Bob, I love reading your postings. You seem to be the only person saying it like it truly is.

You see right thru this Flim Flam Dell deal and you say what's on your mind. Pointing out the BS that Dell is pulling.

It's suppose to be a simple business transaction, not Let's make a Deal.

I don't pretend to know what it is, Sam. We could all get

what we ordered or may not. But at this point I think we're

just guessing (except the lucky few who've received em).

I think that is the best idea yet. I am not reading this board again until I either cancel my order or I receive the darn thing. Ok ok at least not this section ;-)

So, when did you order?

I ordered first thing Monday. An I agree with the above post. The opinions stated above are based on my experiences as a salesman, manager, designer, manufacturer, and consumer. My point is if you were told that you could get a new 1024 x 768 DLP projector for under $2K but it would take several weeks to deliver who here would not order? Obviously we overloaded the system. People who were in at the front are getting deliveries. No one has been told they won't get a projector. If Dell screws up, chooses not to deliver, my opinion will change. But as I said above Dell has consistently treated us very well. Honest companies tend to be fair. I have seen no indication Dell is not an honest company.

Just be patient. Lets see what happens, maybe we all learn something.

Bob

Let's all play it kool until Dell puts up their CRT projector page. Word has it that Sony G90's will be going for $6000 new! If you're the first caller! Then we can get excited!! http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/redface.gif )
