Now we also need some kind agreement on producing the material. Such as:
- original aspect ratio (no overscan/cropping)
- original audio (in addition to any new mix)
- No (intrusive) DNR
- No Edge Enhancement
- Use best available elements
- Always include theatrical version
etc..
We shall see just how successfully these manufacturers and content providers implement this promising initiative. This is nothing new. The professional display calibration community has been enabling this option for discriminating cinephiles at home for decades. As the presumptive "godfather" of video display accuracy, Joe Kane, has been saying all along to anyone who would listen, "It's all about the art!"

It is also important to remind the video industry that a significant challenge remains when considering what is really necessary in delivering an authentic viewing experience of cinematic art in the home. Any video installation must involve a system approach. The video display is only one component in an array of essential parts that compose the whole of how a viewer perceives and experiences the program being reproduced.

Motion picture experts agree that the sound track provides at least 50% of the emotion and impact of a movie or major television production. Attention to detail in telling a dramatic story includes sound, picture, and usually actors' performances. The environment (room conditions) in which the program is presented also has a profound effect upon how the audience experiences the presentation of a program. Room acoustics, placement of equipment relative to the seating location, lighting conditions, and colors in the surroundings, are all important to how the human perceives the presentation. A skilled designer will attend to all of these details when implementing a home entertainment system.

Funny that the people who caused the problem are now the ones implementing the solution. If they just kept all those fancy features disabled by default in their TVs we wouldn't need this.

The plain truth is that TV manufacturers are in business to sell electronic devices. Image fidelity is not a top priority for most TV consumers. The majority want an appliance for visually and audibly communicating information in typical room lighting at their convenience during the day or night. They prefer their appliances to be cheap, simple, convenient, easy to operate, and what will fit into their lifestyle preferences and priorities. Most of the various picture modes are an attempt to compensate for poor viewing consitions in less than optimum installations.

Manufacturers study their markets. The majority of TVs sold are not purchased by videophiles or home theater hobbyists. Picture modes out of the box are featured that allow acceptable viewing in bright rooms such as the average living room or Costco/Walmart/Target/Sam's Club/Best Buy retail show floor. These types of setups are far from the SMPTE standard for a "reference viewing environment."

In comparison, cinephiles, videophiles, and home entertainment forum members are considered a niche market. Thankfully, options are usually provided these days that allow for a "cinema" mode and/or advanced calibration controls to achieve a more accurate picture according to motion imaging industry standards and best practices.

Exactly. So what is this going to change? The people who care about accuracy are already using the appropriate mode.

And no one else is going to care no matter what they call it.

I am always encouraged when there are signs of imaging industry leaders working in a unified manner to agree on improving and implementing standards of excellence! Time will tell. Education in the market is ever ongoing. New generations of fresh perspective come along continually within both the professional and consumer ranks. While most people appear to settle for less than excellence in program reproduction, there are enough who do to continue to drive innovation and advancement. We have come very far from my earliest days of interest in standard definition CRTs, video cassettes and laserdisc, have we not? That has occurred in spite of folks who settle for "good enough."

Letterboxing IMAX films and downscaling to 2K DI is still pretty cool though.
It's an element of human nature for some people to actually prefer to assume a proctologist's view of any subject! Golly, gee, now we have IMAX Enhanced capabilities for consumers, 8K flat panels, RGB laser-lamped projectors, and micro LED panels! For a 69-year-old kid who loves movies, this is an amazing point in home video to be engaged in the profession and the hobby!

Alan,
You ARE being facetious....I hope!

Why do you think so?

Both of those practices are for financial reasons. Letterboxing native IMAX productions is for wider studio distribution of the title to non-IMAX venues. The recent "IMAX Enchanced" program offers promising developments for delivery of IMAX productions to the home that are optimized for 16x9 displays and UHD HDR BD. 2K DI mastering is done by studios who have not yet spent the money to upgrade their post infrastructure for 4K data processing, distribution, and storage.

imax = Liemax worst film format ever to be.
If I pay money for somryjing I want to have a variety of choices to enjoy it while still same ART from same Artist.
I never liked Filmaker Mode and almost never switched to that mode but I still pay money to buy movies.
I am happy that Display makers and other device makers have a variety of options enabled for to choose from depend on MY OWN mood, time, conditions, etc and still enjoy the ART.
If an ARTIST do want his / her product to be seen through their eyes they should open and set up own Gallery or Movie Theater. At home I would like to enjoy in my own way and I am glad that the TV manufacturers provide moire than one option for that enjoiment.
I partiuculiary dislike DV content loking it into their ONLY two settings, IQ or Dark, as the Vivid mode is a joke and does not allow me to switch to other more pleasing to my eyes mods so I started avoiding DV althogether despite of its advantages.
Advantages are only advantages if you enjoy them and DV IQ and DV Dark are not something I would enjoy on reguliarly basis.
Please stop advocating for more ARTIST restrictions (DV restrictions) and AUTOmatic switching (to Filmaker mode) as per somebodys tag.
