A new question about TrueHD

1398 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  geko29
This time im wondering if i bought an HD-A35 instead of an HD-A3 now and waited a bit for the Onkyo 705 ive had my eye on. could i get truehd direct from the HD-A35, My sound system is a logitech 5500-z and it has 6 channel direct. would i be getting dolby trueHD, DTS MA, DTS HD and Dolby plus from that since the player decodes them?

please no: "why not get a proper reciever?" or "whats the point with those speakers?" responses, just would there be an upgrade in sound till i can get the onkyo and new speakers.

If hooked up via the analog outs, the A35 would give you TrueHD and DD+, but you'd still only get the DTS core from DTS-HD. No players decode DTS-HD right now, you need to have an A35 or XA2 to pass it bitstream and a receiver that can decode it to get full DTS- HD/MA.

Which is what the Onkyo will do when i get it, SWEET!! Thanks much.
I wouldn't worry too much about DTS-HD HR and MA on HD DVD, as there's only one title with MA and 4 with HR (Pan's Labyrinth with MA, Nature's Journey and 3 concert discs with HR). For all practical purposes, hooking up the A35 to the Z-5500s with the cables I pointed out in your other thread will get you all the soundtracks you're looking for.

I agree, unless you are heavily into import disks which have DTS-HD on a much greater percentage of disks, I wouldn't worry about DTS-HD.

I do have the Pianist UK which has DTS MA and i've got Pan's Labyrinth coming from Amazon.

Now here comes the part where i hope i don't get flammed, How will it sound? I know Im not expecting it to sound like the demo i heard in my local av store but will TrueHD (and DD+) sound better than my normal DD 640kbs stream and the DTS 1.5 stream currently through my xbox. Would there be any reason that the Z-5500s could not passthrough the anaglog sound at 18mbs? I guess what im trying to ask is, is this a worthwhile upgrade to make now or should i not even bother and just wait the 2-3 months it'll take to get the new reciever and such?

Analog is analog, there is no "18mbs". Whatever is in the sound will be in the analog output. Now whether your speakers are up to the increased fidelity is another story. The only way you can answer this is to try it. RCA audio cables are cheap. You should be able to find a few lying around (they are included in every component sold) or buy 3 pairs off monoprice and give it a shot.

I do believe I mentioned that in my post:
